TOS is running on possibly the worst game engine ever

I honestly do not understand how a game like TOS has so much graphical lag compared to all the modern MMOs like Black Desert Online and Final Fantasy 14 Online.

My CPU temperature never got above 80 degrees celsius in crowded areas in Black Desert Online, but it’s going above 85 degrees celsius in Fedimian Channel 1.

It’s like IMC used the same engine as Ragnarok Online.

FYI here are my specs:

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.140303-2144)

Memory: 18432MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 18424MB RAM

Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 11

User DPI Setting: Using System DPI
System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)

That’s not true. Over the course of video game history there have been many far worse engines.

They didn’t. I think they used a modified engine of the Granado Espada engine.
One of the the main issues seems to be that the TOS game engine supposedly doesn’t have multicore support (haven’t checked that myself).
There are probably many other aspects that could be improved but i don’t want to mention anything that i’m not 100% sure of (i think a big aspect of fps drops is the network code/server communication aswell as asset loading/creation performance).

this game only uses 1 core. soooo yah.

Wow, where do you live? Must be some really warm ambient temp there.

I’m from a tropical country and the weather lately has been making my ass sweat but my CPU temp usually floats around 55-60 in full load. I use a low-end aftermarket heatsink though.

If you’re using a stock heatsink, I’d recommend shelling a small amount for aftermarket heatsink (check reviews) or if you have the money go for AIO coolers.

Yes, apparently the game relies solely on the CPU and as many have said only on one core a time, so it’ll help if you can optimize your CPU load, perhaps overclock it (w/ a better cooling system of course) if you can.

I’m even thinking of selling my GPU to buy an AIO, and new KB and mouse. XD

I run with fx6300 3.5ghz not clocked, 8 ram, gtx 750 TI, MOBO gigabyte 78lmt-s2 and my pc HARDLY goes above 53 degrees playing ToS.

Your solution: Clean your ■■■■■■■ PC on the inside and change the Thermal ■■■■■■■ Paste.
Also, make sure to cut a hole on your cabinet in case it doesn’t have a cooling fan and the proper “hole”, so that the hot air can actually flow instead of getting stuck inside.
Should solve.

Fun facts:
A) Did you know that you can enable the multi-core support functionality with a few HEX changes?
B) Did you know that enabling multi-core does literally nothing outside of boosting FPS in areas with nothing in them and/or for people who generally have very weak computers?

Now that’s just rude, RO itself can hold a stable FPS troughout the eons and caps itself to a lower FPS depending on the amount of players whilist in towns to avoid overheating and other issues.
This might seem stupid these days but back in 2003 it was a very wise decision considering you’d have over 3000 people spread out in towns.

Or for people who want to distribute the thread over 6 physical cores instead of 2? Because that might be a reason i want to get multi-core support.

Also, 3000 people?

I’ve seen over 10k peak in prontera. Not even kidding

Well, if that’s true the multicore support might not be implemented in all parts of the engine, which would explain that.

It certainly not the worst engine but it scales badly which you wouldn’t expect with an MMO engine.

I played GE for a year+ and every weekend battles are as laggy. That was like 7 years ago. Making a game out of its engine is beyond horrible.

For an MMO, I don’t think I’ve ever seen worse. ToS can’t maintain a stable, acceptable framerate in NORMAL gameplay situations like Team Battle League 5v5 or a World Boss with just 2 parties, let alone full on GvG or highly contested world bosses with 6+ parties (which doesn’t even happen anymore because the population has fallen off so sharply).

Seriously when have you played an MMO that tanks so badly in completely typical gameplay situations? It’s one thing for it to be chugging in huge battles or in a highly populated town, but any game that dipped into single digit FPS at times in a 5v5 arena would be ■■■■■■■ roasted by any critic.

Game engine is just fine for IMC’s vision of ToS.
Why do you think they’re killing the game? They were expecting this to be a single player game for @hkkim so it’s only natural that it doesn’t run smoothly with more than one player.

TOS engine sucks, but your computer has cooling problems.

TOS is the new Crisis. the PC to run doesn’t exist yet.

Considering this is a 2015-2016 game, this is just mind blowing. A game with these graphics should run at 500 fps on most current systems. However, I wouldn’t expect a fix for the Guild War or when there’s too many characters on the screen anytime soon. That is also affected by the server’s performance and not only the hardware and as we all know TOS servers aren’t the best to begin with.

The only way to fix this game is to rework the engine from the ground up or else they’ll keep adding bugs to the game and nothing will ever get fixed.

IMC is not a big company, their DEV team must be fairly small.

does anyone else find it odd that the FPS on Steparu’s videos seems to be so much better that the ones we are experiencing with ITOS?

The engine Ragnarok ran/runs on will never get your PC into technical issues.
You can run that game on a modified toaster and it’d work just fine. They even ported it to the mobile market.

In Black Desert Online on the other hand, you got thread counts piling up on top of each other because the game is so friggin unstable that it leads to randomized crashes in specific areas.

TL;DR: You are horrible at making comparisons.

It’s a bit far-fetched, but some of the FPS issues might be related to the large chunk of data transferred between client and server (at least I experienced that in MS before)

So in kTOS it’s pretty much a local country connection, while in iTOS it’s on AWS, transferring large chunk of data over the longer connection will cause client to freeze while waiting, thus dropping the FPS more.

Game is running pretty good on my 6 year old computer that was midrange at the time.

Best of all, the playing field is fair. The latest and greatest computers don’t get that much more advantage in PvP…cuz everyone running the same.
