Thoughts on Peltasta

I really like Peltasta. It feels the way a tank should… when the enemy isn’t using magic.

Magic attacks can’t be blocked or dodged, meaning the only way to effectively build Peltasta to handle magic is by going CON, and wearing cloth. This is a pretty heavy build limitation. SPR would provide some minor magic def, but the stat has no real use for Peltasta.

So… thoughts? Is this something IMC should review? Should there be skills/attributes on Peltasta or later classes that allow for magic defense? I understand the idea behind the Swordsman tree is phsyical combat, without magic, but that kind of puts them between a rock and a hard place, when it comes to game balance. A well-built cleric can tank phyiscal damage almost as well as a Peltasta, and does phenomenally better against magic.

There is some magic that can be blocked, for example Harpeia’s AoE or Mineloader’s skills (most bosses can be blocked).

While there are mobs that use magic that cannot be blocked, you are not supposed to face-tank those, you are required to position better and move around to avoid them.

You are not required to build CON or use cloth armor at all in the current state of the game.

That is my experience as I have been through every map, every quest, every dungeon and every boss this game has all the way up to level 200.

I have to somewhat agree. I’m currently playing a C2 Peltasta C1 Hoplite with Cloth armor and a shield that buffs Magic defense. Even with a cloth armor build I can tank physical attacks quite well by depending on my block. (High guard plus block stance gives plenty of defense) but I still get shredded when I face a mage mob.

I guess if you have to make a truly defensive class Con/Spr, you really have to forgo the offense or pick another circle that compensates for the lost offense.

I’m not so sure about PVP though. PVM-wise I can just evade magic attacks

Im pretty sure the intention is that they don’t want you to be invincible to everything and to need other classes help. So yea magic still hurts you, if you want it to hurt less make friends with a pally.

Nobody is aiming for “invincible”. The point is, a defensive cleric can out-tank a peltasta in almost every way, and the biggest difference is apparent with magic enemies.

If you want to talk party dynamics, look at it this way: every tank peltasta becomes useless when the party fights a magic boss. Conversely, the tank cleric is never useless.

If we look at solo play instead, it becomes clear that the best way to survive a magic boss, as a swordsman, is to have high DPS. It becomes, " the faster you kill, the less likely you die". This is completely opposed to how a peltasta plays. Sure, you could argue tanks are meant for parties, but then I’d direct you to the previous paragraph.

What are these magic bosses that you talk about? I didn’t see any on my way to 200.

Or you mean the ones which magic attacks can be blocked by a shield?

Peltasta is fine.

Clerics cannot out tank a Peltasta. Clerics have no way of pullling or keeping aggro at all.

Clerics do not have enough HP to tank those magic attack bosses lol. Or maybe I have yet to see these defensive clerics you speak off at lvl 112. Either way defensive builds are meant for party play and youll have to rely on others skills like heal or safety zone so you can tank those magic attacks better.

O i forgot clerics can taunt O WAIT THEY CANT.

a clerics survive ability only serves himself not the group like a peltestas does.

Since you are Peltasta , could you provide some insights about blocking ? Like how much block do you have and how often do you block against a monster of equal level ?

@orcsmd

Between block and dodge, you can cut out almost all hits, assuming your shield is up. The rare hit gets through. On bosses, certain hits that knock back often deal damage after the knock back. This means, they’ll deal you damage by breaking your block.

Some mobs and bosses have magic attacks you can neither block nor dodge, meaning your best bet is to hop around and pile on the damage, hoping their health bar goes down faster than yours.

As it stands, I switch to Arde Dagger against those kinds of bosses, because blocking is useless.

Note that I am a peltasta that does not use High Guard, because the majority of my damage comes from alternative classes. As a High Guard, you will auto-block a lot more, but damage output will be lower. Umbo and Rim Blow get a nice buff with High Guard, but it is still lower damage than picking up altnerative damage options from more offense-oriented classes.

i think peltasta need a “self-heal” skill or increase HP regen when guard

No, Tank/Peltasta is a character to group play.
If I get regen/heal, I would solo everything on this game.
