Thoughts on a not so tanky tank

So as I was leveling up my Peltasta I started to notice my damage is very low and my killing capability is very restricted to a lot of patience AND skill spamming. Problem is, I just had CON so far - which made it very hard to kill anything without help. Basically because I am all HP, low damage and low SP. Not fun. But I really was willing to sacrifice all of that for the sake of a good tank, to help friends and whatnot.

Then I noticed Guard does this job and doesn’t require anything else, like high levels of CON. You just stand there and block everything in front of you. Tough shield. Which got me thinking I really didn’t need to invest 3 ranks in Peltasta just to be able to tank in a good fashion. Yes, High Guard’s attributes adding up to 330% damage to Umbo Blow and Rim Blow seemed very appealing to me. Until I put it on the calculator (I actually just scribbled on my desk, so it could be wrong) and found out it’ll add to a total of 1596 - which is still lower than the Barbarian’s Seism at level 10 (1752)

Comparing the two classes I realized how many more attack options (read “skills”), the Barbarian has for himself. That’s a ton! And some pretty cool ones too! Not to mention fun buffs.

So I did this:

Keeping the Peltasta is a must for being a tank, since I WILL need the Swash Buckling and the Guard attribute. I’ve kept one level of Squire to be able to aid the party in a different way, but it can be acquired earlier, leaving the last rank to finish the Barbarian’s last Circle.
Warcry and Frenzy seem to work very well together, specially if it ends with a giant Seism on the target’s face.

*I gave up on Cleave to use that (Seism) since I don’t how much it adds when a target is stunned.
*I also didn’t get Giant Swing because I’m not sure if it hits the enemies caught by the rope swing (if it does, I might change it)
*Barbarian’s have so many damaging skills! It’s really hard to figure out which ones I should use.

Stat wise, I am not planning on giving up on a high CON. So far I’ve noticed it gives nice bonus every few other levels (which I believe to be every 3 points invested). However, I really will need to boost my mana pool to use skills more freely if I wanna do some damage. This got me wondering how to make it work.

I still am not very convinced adding points in STR is worthwhile, since it seems to add such little improvement to me. But adding SPR will raise my Magic Defense and give me the SP I crave. I’m not sure if I should add equal values to CON and SPR (or not even invest on those, and maybe focus on DEX - so I can have some probably needed Accuracy and crit chance)

*I also don’t know how necessary DEX is on the later game, since I’m still on level 40

To summarize, I believe I’m going for a hard-hitting-party-helper tank - if that exists.

If someone who is playing as a Tank or already has an advanced Barbarian (or both!) could help me with some insight and share some knowledge, I’d be eternally grateful.

Meanwhile I’ll be burning the ground, luring monsters and running in circles with my Pyromancer.

They need to fix how damage and Stats work TBH. The reason skills have “base damage” is so that tanks can do damage even when going tanky (same concept as League of Legends) but currently it feels clunky.

i have a peltasta 3, squire , i made a full con/str build for most levels, after some time i got this conclusion: you dont need to invest full con, my current build have 126srt 60con 70dex , and having 13k of health at lvl 131 using block i dont need to worry about phisical dmg since you cant block magic , lvl 5 Swash Buckling is more than enough ,

Don’t invest in Spirit , the amout of magical defense you get just don’t compensate, mana potions are not that expensive at the late game.

the dex i have help me dodge some atqs and give me a good critical for griding.

i have guardian 10 and hight guard 10 in 90% of the time i dont even use those because i lose all my dmg

so my advice is if you aways play with friends you can go full tank and let they do all the dmg but solo playing is frustanting , i can block basicaly every phisical dmg my only concern is to avoid magical atqs

peltasta is a nice class block is a exelent hability , and Swash Buckling is great for mobing , but is a defensive class and he dont have hight dmg , you can be like me and accept you will aways be a suport class and become a squire or later on try to get a dmg classe

Did you have trouble hitting thing before investing in DEX?
Do you feel like STR really is needed? It seems to add so little for every point invested…
But yeah, I was worried about the magical dmg and thought SPR could help…
Thanks for the input!

only a few monster , like bats but probaly because they have high evasion. i think a good glove is enought to keep your acurracy.

yes str do make a difference if i not mistaken before i had around 250 of phisical attack with 70-80 of str now with 126 str i have 405-432

but this is my “dps” buid , so far i had no troble with regular monster and bosses , still have to try on the 130 dungeon to see how it handle stronger mobs

By going Peltasta > Barbarian you lose synergy of highlander’s passive of 50% crit atk with 2-handers.
By not going Peltasta > Hoplite you lose finestra buff for block/crit rate.

Anyway you chose some weird build. Good luck with that.

You can pop High Guard, use amplified rim and umbro blows, then dispel High Guard by right clicking it in buff panel.

I guess you noticed it by how I named it? hahaha
“Hard-hitting-party-helper tank” really sounds weird. But in my head it made sense, since I’d be able to keep some buffs on and make the most of it.
At the cost of missing that synergy. That’s why I decided to post it here before actually going for it.

Thanks for the input!

Thats called “tank with dps” - the faster you kill the less damage you and your party will get. Or rather kill them faster than they kill you. =)

That’s Sun Tzu right there

if you want damage you could pick Doppelsoldner right ? since you will have a considerable amount of block the defense debuff from Deeds would not affect that much
