So yeah, I play this game on dial-up. It doesn’t run too badly. My problem is how to patch the game. ( Scroll to the ****** text to get to the point. )
Initially I had to drag my desktop with me across town and set it up at a friend’s house to use his high-speed connection to install it. Once it was all set, I took my system back home. Started the game, game ran, turned it off for the night.
The next morning the game wanted to patch. Steam was running incredibly slow and after leaving it to download for an hour, it had acquired a grand total of 33kb worth of data.
So I took my roomate’s laptop, installed Steam onto it, moved my game folder onto it, and went to town to sit in a parking lot to use their wifi. Game downloaded the update ( and only the update. It didn’t re-download the entire client ), game started, took the laptop back home, moved the files back onto my system.
ToS proceeded to begin patching anyway. I ended up having to drag my desktop back to town to set it up at the friend’s house to update.
Took it all back home, game worked fine. A few hours later, the game crashed, couldn’t log back in because of the “Failed to download list file” error. Ran the integrity verify function in Steam through right clicking the game and going to properties.

So I move the folder onto the laptop again, go to town, run update, acquire files, come back home, move folder back, ToS proceeds to download update anyway. Those files are now missing from my steam folder. I copy them from the laptop, move them into place on my system, run validation. It deletes every single file with an error about “size mismatch”. ( I can’t find the error in my logs right now )
Updating on steam with this connection is impossible. The file is supposed to be roughly 11 MB in size. I started the download with roughly 3 hours remaining. Watched TV for a few hours, came back to 3 hours remaining with 110kb downloaded. ( Network usage said over 20MB had been downloaded ) My best guess is that the download continually times out and restarts.
****** Thus, my issue is this. As steam will not download this update on dial-up. Is there any way I could get to these files with my download manager program? That seems to be the only way I can update my game without physically dragging my desktop to town every time the game craps out and requires updating.
Any other solution would be greatly appreciated as well. I can’t quite figure out why a fully updated version of the game is suddenly broken when I put it back onto my hard drive. ( I’m moving the entire steam folder, by the way. Not just the game )
Sorry for the long post. It took me forever to even manage to log onto this forum, so I wanna make sure I get every detail posted. Thanks much for taking a look.
