Tanking Experiences from a new ToS player but experienced MMO tank

Hello guys, I’m Parmenion , I didn’t reach the later levels because i didn’t have the opportunity to enter the beta till the last key giveaway.
I have always played as a tank in most of the MMO i played and always tried to search for non “linear” or common tanking gameplay.

WoW 7 years from Vanilla to the middle of Cataclysm, in a guild cleaning all ending content before nerf, playing tank (MT) from Vanilla ( Aq40 and Naxxramas 40) to the end of my adventure.
Wildstar as an offensive Warrior and cleaned the raid 20 as fast as the game ended xD (using the same rotation than a “Dps” warrior with some adjustements to fit more in a tanking role).

I finaly had an opportunity to test this promising MMO called Tree of Savior with graphics reminding me Legend of Mana, a game I really loved. I kinda love bashing mobs to relax my brain and the rank system is really appealing (remind me somehow the freedom given in Path of exil. I always played melee characters in every MMO so I decided to create a swordman.

After a quick look in game on the attributes and the skills, I was tempted to do a swordman 3 / Hoplite 3 (S2/H3/S+1) using the maximum potential of Gung-Ho + Concentrate. I stopped my adventure around lvl 130, soloing the mage tower, all the “Sin demon’s zones” and the previous content (dungeon excepted but cleaned all the packs of the 132 lvl dungeon and wiped on the first boss  ) so basically stop at rank 5. I tried an heavily based auto attack build.
My point was really easy to understand: to take only CON and stay competitive in aggro using Provoke and bonus damage from Concentrate and Gung-oh and use the synergy between CON and Finestra % block value bonus. I maxed out early Concentrate to kill “relatively fast” the monster.

I was in the 90 lvl dungeon with my friend, an archer that was complaining about the fact he add to wait for the monsters to be packed in one point before rollfacing his keyboard. I never had any problem with the threat (seems the dev went overboard on the threat bonus coming from Provoke) even with my relatively low dps. So I took Peltesta as my 5th rank just to try this aoe taunt out and take this template at the end:

I had 22K hp and around 400 block after buffs (around 40 str / 160 con / 20 dex). My gear was not really good. The only nice pieces were +5 Zega spear http://www.tosbase.com/database/items/242106/ and +5 strength pendant. http://www.tosbase.com/database/items/242106/ .
I was using Synchro in place of Stabbing/Piercing but the cooldown is really long and the range of this ability is insanely bad (its range is smaller than your auto attack range…) even if the damage is really high. So I plan on the OBT and the release to use a mix of Stabing/Pierce.

Peltesta was really a good addition but I really feel like this rank is too mandatory because of Swashbuckling overpowerness (long and large range taunt…)! The other abilities are nice addition too (because you lack of damage diversity). The attributes are also too good for just 1 Rank.
It feels like having no choice :frowning: Like bacon with bacon, too good to skip this

Discussion and comments :

Why bash and not 5 in pain barrier?

I really like to have access to all type of damage and bash is the only slashing damage I have access to and it is not that bad at early level) but you can easily swap those point to pain barrier for the extra seconds but at least keep one point for the knock down.

Why restrain?

I use restrain over more point in bash/pain barrier because a cced monster is unlikely doing damage to you. It is really strong when used with stabbing and in conjunction of Umbo blow stun attribute. The only problem of this skill is the long cd…

Attributes in Gung ho?

I personnaly didn’t throw point in it because a 1/1 trade off seems really poor but maybe it ll be necessary to remain competitive in damage/threat part. What do you think about this? At the end, I had to do a 1 STR/1 CON to kill the monster properly.

Pierce or Stabbing?

I really need your guidance on it, because Pierce is really hitting hard on bosses (really deal ton of damage after a succesfull Spear lunge) and Stabbing is amazing on packs. I really hate to be unable to move during Stabbing animation especially on bosses (I usually don’t use stabbing on bosses for this reason or just going for the kill).

Wtf Spear lunge?

I prefer to upgrade this cd for simple reasons, this skill got an overheat, deals really good damage and is on a lower cd. It is a shame that the updrage//an attribute doesn’t give more time on the debuff (it is possible to have 12 sec of vulnerability in a range of 30 sec). It will be too powerfull to keep it full time up maybe :innocent: . If you have some explanation about why it is not good, I’ll gladly accept them.

What would you take as R6 with this base?

Swordman 3 seems really underwhelming. The gem monster on concentrate can help to be sure to be at least 80% of the time under the effect on static fight and permanently if you have to move. The bonus on Gung ho is nice but double slash seems underwhelming without proper setup.

Hoplite 3 seems better than the first option, because it gives you 10% more blocking and also some crit value from finestra. Throw spear is really meh for me because you have to search for your weapon to avoid the creepling effect… Hoplite 2 gaves you already all the passive attributes really needed (bleed for Pierce only 10% of time but remember you hit to a maximum of 4 times with the other attribute “continous attack”).

Squire seems really appealing because of arrest (and the attributes on it) than can be used in conjunction of spear lunge for burst damage. You can also mention all the others goodies offered by the class.

Do you have any ideas of other class I could use to keep this gameplay online?

Thank you for reading and sorry about my english.
Best regards
Parmenion

I find restrain as more of a pvp only skill. It’s effectiveness in pve is too limiting at a % chance / can’t use on bosses / long CD. Most things die before it even matters.

I feel like leveling the attributes keeps gung ho relative at later levels, somewhat. The tradeoff isn’t that bad, considering how even with some loss of physical defense, you still have tons of block and the ability to guard so it isn’t a real loss, but rather an overall gain in optimized tanking + dps.

Piercing is great, but stabbing is perhaps one of the best bossing skills in all the swordsman trees. You should start getting used to using it on bosses. Find their downtimes, usually it’s fairly long between attacks on most bosses, and use stabbing for tons of pierce damage.

As for tanking, I agree, I’d take hoplite over swordsman 3.

The one main negative to Spear Lunge is that the debuff isn’t 100% From what I’ve experienced, it didn’t activate enough for me to consider taking it.

I don’t get it. How do you want to stack Spear Lunge and Arrest… When Arrest leaves your character busy? Unless your colleagues are going to benefit from the debuffs.

And Stabbing with Pain Barrier tends to be effective. Many things still can stop you, but between Pierce and Stabbing I would prefer to max Stabbing.

Is there any other combination aside from hoplite + peltasta for a good main tank with decent or best dps?

It’s harder to balance it than you might think
You can’t expect yourself to be really tanky if you will have a strong focus on your DPS. For starters, the real reason why hoplite is best for a tank is because hoplites can’t wear 2H spears unless they go pick Cata up or Dragoon. So they are left with 1H spear and a shield.

Peltasta on the other hand, has swash buckling that draws aggro of nearby enemies and the number of enemies that are aggroed depends on the level of this skill. It also increases Peltasta’s max HP when the attribute is taken.

Most DPS options are out if you go commit a peltasta because you can’t use most of the tanking skills w/o a shield so taking classes with 2H sword as their main weap will leave you with skills that you won’t take because you can’t use it while tanking.

Oh and mind you, Peltasta has the ability to block with a shield using a C icon which is very useful against physical dmg type enemies.
