The homepage and the forums account are two separate accounts that use the same email/sign up methods as a way to verify the account. This can be tested by logging off the homepage and see that your forum account is still logged in, and can be tested vice versa. This can be fixed by pairing the email addresses of both home and forum accounts then merge them under 1 account. The only problem that this can cause is that if for any rare reason someone signed up with a Facebook account on the homepage and Google+ for the forums or the other way around, things won’t move as smoothly. It would be better to fix this problem using this method now while the game is still fresh rather waiting till more people join.

They aren’t totally independent in that way of the home page account being dominant over the forum account. If you are logged in the homepage and try to sign in on the forums, it will automatically make the forum account link with the home account. Unfortunately, it isn’t the same way vice versa, which I personally find annoying.
