Sword and shield build, your opinions?

Hi there, casual player here trying to build a character that wields swords and shields only. I know that by equipping shield as offhand I am sacrificing damage but I would like to know if there are other things that would be sacrificed if I push through with this build. I’m asking you experienced and experts to identify the pros and cons of this build actually.

I was planning to do
SW>PELT>>PELT>HL>HL>ROD>ROD
or a
SW>PELT>PELT>PELT>HL>HL>HL
with a 3:1 str:con ratio. I decided on HL because of Skyliner and I think I’d ditch the 2H sword and stick with 1H sword + shield. Is this build that bad? And is there a better build out there for this kind of restriction? Looking forward to your violent reactions.

You might want to look at Hoplite if you are ok with spears.
Highlander suffers from some weird thing called: “non-bleedable mobs” :stuck_out_tongue:
You could try to look into the Shinobi tank build for sword and board I guess or HL2 Barb2 + whatever (dunno about that one)

Someone experienced with anything that’s not Highlander might give you more pointers.

Sword and shield is mostly for full tanks, if that’s gonna be your general play style.

You could try:

I’d drop Concentrate from this build though and go Gung Ho x5. Concentrate becomes obsolete as Gung Ho scales percentage wise where as Concentrate is just a flat buff. Someone else experienced in shields could probably tell you more opinions here. You will lose some damage as Fencer using a Shield, but hey, the damage will still be great. It’s not as huge of a deal as some have made it out to be, but it is still a thing. The reason Fencer is a good choice Rank 6 & 7 is because they have Evasion skills that at level 10 on just 1 gives an extra 100% Evasion.

Pretty much anything with Rodelero 2 is a good idea for tanks, they are one of the only classes that have a skill that helps with magical damage.

Now if you don’t want to be a tank

A very good spear wielding build. You could opt to take C2 Dopple instead of Dragoon if you wanted, they are very popular for Deeds of Valor and Cyclone. However fair warning DPS is some what gimped right now, but like all DPS swordies, you can wait for the incoming balances they have said they will do. When they will come is a question we’re all asking.

As for Highlander if you really like that class, it can fit into a lot of DPS builds. I really don’t think taking it in your last ranks is the best of ideas, you will lose a lot of damage as later ranking classes deal more. Someone from IMC has also stated they want early rank classes to phase out damage wise, so it’s always best to think in terms of utility.

Have a looksie and see what else tickles your fancy. kToS got some buffs on there for this class, but they have said we probably will not get them here.

don’t know if you focus on pvp or pve ?

Wow thanks for the build suggestions. Sword and shield looks cool to me so I wanted to build one but it was not a good idea.
I actually want a balanced build for PVE. I’m afraid if I go full tank, I wouldn’t have the damage to keep the aggro and DPS melee might not be a good idea for me. I’d be considering your Dragolite build but I might go pelt>bar c3> dop c2 with 3:1 stat still.
