Stop giving rewards for translating

After we found out that translators would be given betakeys the github was swarmed with people doing machine translations or simply sloppy job with the translation.

IMCGAMES needs to stop giving out rewards for translations because it drags the quality of the translation down.

I like to think that whatever rewards translators will get has already been given. Life’s supposed to be full of surprises…I was honestly surprised when I got my 3 keys, all I wanted for my contribution was Github brownie points so I look better among my programmer/web developer peers.

id say give the royalties to legit translators =3=" without translators… we wouldnt have an early beta test

Unless they reward everyone who sends in a translation, there’s no issue with rewarding people who do a good job. I’m sure they have some form of quality check so they won’t use the terrible translations.

I’d like some reward for proofreaders, too.
(because we all know why we need proofreaders after this beta…)

How about a kickstarter to hire some professional translators?

I would gladly throw down a $50 for that.

yea, especially the skills description needs to be reworded to become clearer to understand for the locals.

exactly, like that one swordsman skill. what does fainting even do.

LMFAO quality check, In game I met with some recipe that had 3 ways to name the same item, The recipe had one name, the necklace had another name, and the mat required had another name :o all 3 being a variation of the other one.
The recipe was called Saffie Necklace, the Necklace was actually called Safie Neckace, and the item was Schafie block.

Something like that, I cant actually recall the exact name but you get the idea >.<

EDIT: On topic, Im all on for the rewards for translators, its an incentive for people to work for it o.o even if they are “machine translations” I believe at some point someone will have to review the translations for a quality check :o I don’t think they will have the playerbase do all the work.

  • There wouldn’t even be a beta to play if the community hadn’t helped translate the game to begin with.
  • They gave it out 1 time to people who had contributed before the announcement had been put up
  • Go and help out if you know you can do better

I mean they probably don’t use the first translation that comes in but I agree that they do need stricter quality checks and proofreading to polish the game. Names are hard because there may not be a direct translation such as the name of the item you mentioned.

Have you guys played RO? On fRO (which became the official european server) there are TONS of ambiguities and inconsistencies. Some NPCs (like Dieshinn Man, Daisin Man, or whatever name he was called) had a different name while he was standing, different while talking, different in quests etc. Translation of TOS is much better than RO’s and it’s still in development. Let people translate, proofread and then make pull requests as they wish. In the end the translation will blow our minds.

Depending on the game publisher hosting MMOs, some don’t even have translator for the game and makes everyone up completely. Some even use Machine Translations and then reword/edit it to sound more fluent. They are too cheap to hire actual translator because they are too costly…

I just leave it here…

Been fixed already in pull request.

I think that if they screened translators better, then they would’ve sent out a lot fewer invites. I for one am a skilled translator that hasn’t played yet, so it’s too bad that those of us that actually care about translating are stuck and those that abuse the system are being given everything and anything…

I wish I would’ve known about the translators being given keys earlier, though, because I completely missed out. They should also be willing to give keys out more often to skilled translators that can prove their work is good.

I was doing the quest for circle 3 wizard. “Collect Glizardon horns”, says the quest giver.

I look at my quest log on the side of the screen “0/3 Horn of Glee Pigs”

Then that one enemy in the chapel had like, 4 different names whenever someone talked about it. Pawnd, Pawndu, Pond, Pondu, Pawndy

Yeah, them’s some quality translations alright. Definitely need some sort of screening process or something.

There was plenty of time to translate before the announcement, the people who got keys from translating didn’t know they would get a key when they started translating.

They did it to help out a game they wanted to come to the international market.

The game is still in beta so a lot of the text is messy and rushed (Done is better than perfect). The lines basically go through stages like this:

Rough Translation -> Grammar/Spelling Cleanup -> “Professional Touch”

Most of it is somewhere between that first and second stage. While the few contributors who actually know Korean help move them along to the third stage. It’ll all look better at final release.

I disagree, honestly… I’m the kind of translator that does things right. I take my time, only do it by hand, and make it look and fit right. I never release translations unless they are up to my standard.

Rushing it does not work, especially in a professional, official-game environment.
