Sometimes I wish IMC kept ToS simple like RO

Ok, I know a lot of you are rolling your eyes at the title, but at least hear me out.

RO was “innocent” back then, and it was definitely a breath of fresh air being one of the earliest MMOs that was introduced to the gaming community.

It was a casual game for a lot of people, casual in terms of the social aspect of the game which was also the “hook” that kept people playing instead of everyone rushing to reach lvl 99.

RO is also a solo friendly game that caters well to solo play. Remember healing mobs in GH graveyard? Chilling in Payon dungeon? firewalling Alarms in the clock tower? or just window shop in Prontera? the list goes on and on and on.

Now let’s look at TOS, a game with massive potential but there are so many things wrong about it.

  1. Leveling: Let’s face it… it should either be a quest based game or a grind based game like RO, mixing the two is fine but at least make the grinding part on par with questting and make it as rewarding than what it is now. The spawn rates would have been fustified if majority of the classes are single target classes like how it was in RO. It is definitely lackluster with TOS’s designs. (multi hit, mobbing, aoe skills etc)

  2. Exploring: another thing that makes RO amazing is the size of each map and how fun it was to explore all of them. Exploring in TOS feels forced and the only reason to “explore” is for quest and exploration achievements.

  3. Social aspect: This game does not allow a lot of socializing outside of the friends you play with. joining a guild would help but I will never get why they would gate guild creation behind a rank 7 class. It’s either sacrificing your first char for a templar, or lvling one after you are “done” with your main. and it has 35 char slots…

Dungeons are supposed to be fun: But dungeons in TOS is just another mundane activity that has a daily limit. There’s really nothing more to the dugeon system.

Lets face it IMC, people will always look back and compare this game to RO, being the same publisher and making the game looks so similar to RO doesn’t help you a bit. Not saying RO is a flawless game but RO got a lot of things right.

I know TOS has only been officially out for two weeks, but I am sure IMC can see what the majority of the player expects or how they want the game to improve.

Was talking with some RO friends earlier and we both agreed that IMC would have been better off with simply copying RO.

Just wanted to point out that RO’s BGM is WAY BETTER than TOS.

RO is never simple, if you look deep into the storyline, your mind will be blown to bits, RO quests are the best out there.

You’re like, comparing banana with pineapple. ToS has nothing to do with RO except maybe for generally similar graphics and music. But okay, let’s dive into this comparison:

1 - About leveling, you have both the choice of doing quests or grinding. RO didn’t have good quests at all (yeah remember how you ALWAYS had to follow a walkthrough website to get quests done? remember how there was no obvious hint on how to do RO quests?). Not to mention RO quests were way worse in the originality aspect (most of steps were either talk to npc or gather items) of it. Now, grinding on open field areas on ToS is usually a waste of time, but there are some nice grinding dungeons with fun and interesting events that make grinding a not-so-bad experience.

2 - Exploring in RO? There really was no rewards for exploring at all. You just got nice new map scenery and maybe a different music. In ToS there’s a collection chest for every map that I’m always tempted to find, some other random treasures that require keys, AND a reward for exploring 100% of the map (exp cards). You can argue exploring in ToS is slightly more difficult because maps are more linear and you may end up in a 30+ higher level area than your level and get your buttie whooped. But exploring in ToS is a lot more rewarding.

3 - The social aspect of RO came mostly from people who were max level or nearly maxed and loved to sit in town and chit-chat. People who were bored from nothing to do in end-game and that didn’t want to leave the game so they instead went to socialize and spend time in town. Nowadays people have so many other choices of games to play that when they get bored they just jump to another game instead of being bored and socializing. It’s not because “RO was more social”, it’s because times were different.

When RO came out 10 years ago (almost 11 now?) the expectations from any sort of game were incredibly lower. Players would be OK with having a game without quest markers or indicators telling you where to go, simply because having such things were a luxury back then.

Big MMOs titles still known nowadays from 10 years ago were successful not because they were so unique compared to today’s new released MMOs. Old games like RO, Lineage 2, Ultima Online, etc were successful because they were simply released first. Getting their chunk of the market early on.

If ToS was released 10 years ago the game would have tons more positive steam reviews and popularity. Even considering the current game state, buggy games were a lot more acceptable back then (hell, remember how RO was buggy in alpha and transitioning to beta?).

The guild behind a rank 7 Templar makes no sense lol.

RO players were also innocent back then, they had no clue what to do, they only followed their instincts and followed the path they saw fit, they did explore.

Now players are more concerned on following optimal paths, only caring about building the best builds as the common mass does and treating the game as a some sort of speedrun fest.

More social aspects would be neat, though I honestly think it’s more an issue with the mentality of mmorpg players today versus an issue with the game itself. Which I mean, you can’t force people to be more social than they want to be.

I feel like a lot of your sentiment comes from nostalgia though. Cap rushing was always a thing, having different ways to level is a good thing (though I don’t like how the game more or less forces you to do both and in set intervals), and this game has been cleared pretty fast by solo players.

I do agree that dungeons could be much more fun and that the maps are a tad linear (though, this fits with the exploration system so I don’t really want to opt for a change), but I think ToS really does capture that “innocent” feel much better than any other game out currently.

I have 17 years of online gaming experience, perhaps I was too naive back then…:unamused:

I really like the Collecting part of RO the best, like for example, you would fight X Boss to get material to craft X item. It didn’t seem like you can’t do much in CBT2. Since it’s F2P, I bet they would rather sell hats and costume then being able to get it without paying anything.
Although RO is OLD, it still has some awesome concepts that makes the game GREAT and there are some new things that makes the game better (like graphics of course) and new things that makes it suck (P2W/FTP) and causes the company to make restrictions and such due to there greediness.
I bet you’ll see an item in the store that will like you do dungs more than x amount of time. Why? because they do whatever to make money. That’s the motto.

The addition of these things ruined quests for me in mmos. Now they are just mindless for the most part. Follow the blinking light… click this… go to this circle on the map… Of course, a good storyline can make up for this, but imo that should be left for a single player game.

In a game i used to play that was similar to RO, there were less quests but they were much more meaningful and gave meaningful rewards. You actually had to think about how to complete them because they didnt tell you. This is what i like.

Although, since the quests system was like this, the main way of leveling was grinding, which i dont mind.

nope, it makes plenty of sense. or, now that shout is mostly clear of bots, do we want to fill it back up with the typical “JOIN DIS GUILD WE R LEET NO ONE UNDER LV200+ #1 BEST AT GUILD WAR EVERY WEEK” ?

it’s getting pretty old seeing thread after thread complaining “why can’t this game be more like [some other game] ?” rather than just letting it grow and evolve on its own.

I agree. Guilds are more meaningful this way.
