Hello!
I plan to play with friends then open beta starts and do some theorycrafting now. I’ll play PvE in constant party most of a time and choose a role of tank. After reading a forum and playing with skill calculator i still feel a need to ask some questions (maybe dumb one, but still):
At first i think about Swordman C1 -> Peltasta C3 -> Squire C3 (something like that ), but then I realize it must be very hard to leveling because of huge lack of attack power. Will it worth it to go that way in terms of be max useful for party, or it’s to hardcore?
Are there any options beside a Peltasta C3 to dedicated tank build?
What class will be useful after Peltasta C3 to enhance tanking abilities (and will it worth it)?
Are there any options to enhance an offensive potential of Peltasta C3?
Advices about skill and stat builds will be highly appretiated.
My question : Why do you choose Squire? If it’s for making money, then take it at c3. If it’s only for Repair utility in grinding or dungeons, then c1 is enough.
For me, it is pretty hardcore because you can’t deal much damage compared to other classes even if you go full STR build. (I played the same exact build as yours and I had a nightmare)
Rodelero, for defensive CC against mobs and " a bit useful" in PvP.
Fencer, because of +50% evasion from Lunge.
Peltasta C2, only for High Guard lv 1 and Swashbuckling lv 10 (which is always enough).
Cataphract, running around the map quickly while gathering mobs.
Hoplite c2 = Finestra lv 10 provides 20% bonus block (use spear)
Fencer c1 = Lunge provides 50% evasion and Flaconnade provides temporary block bonus (although I forgot the amount)
Of course there are :
Sword c1 > Peltasta c3 > Hop c2 > Dragoon c1
Sword c1 > Peltasta c3 > Hop c2 > Doppel c1
Sword c1 > Peltasta c3 > High c2 > Dragoon c1
Sword c1 > Peltasta c3 > High c2 > Doppel c1
Sword c1 > Peltasta c3 > Rode c1 > Doppel c1 > Fencer c1
Thanks a lot, Erokhi. I read your guide it’s a useful one. But I’m a bit misunderstanding terminology - whats mean “CC”?
Yes, i choose squire for party support, think that camp, food and weapon maintenance would be a good buff for party, and Arrest give my character some additional mob control option.
I have some question about you say:
Fencer Lunge boost evade, does it mean i must go con/dex or get dex over con if i choose that way?
I wonder, what build would choose you if you want create a tanking character for constant party?
What skills from Doppel C1 would be useful here?
Will dragoon skills work with one handed spear and what dragoon skills will be useful for tanking character? And same about highlander.
Oh, one more newb question - tell me please, how guard works?
CC = crowd control. Stun, Stop, Sleep, Bind, Freeze, etc. Anything that makes your opponent disabled for a period of time.
Trust me, you will rarely use Arrest against mobs, mostly against boss. You can also use it against players as long as they don’t have any status prevention mechanism.
As a PvE tank, you will need a lot of HP, so I recommend CON over DEX. And then simply grab Plate armor set for more HP. Plate armor also offers 10% physical damage reduction and bonus 1700HP at lv 50 plate armor matery.
Sword 1 > Pelt 1 > Hop 1 > Hop 2 > Hop 3 > Pelt 2 > Drag 1
Swashbuckling lv 10 (provoke 16 mobs which is enough for grinding, dungeons, even Earth Tower),
Finestra lv 15 (block-crit rate),
Guardian (18% bonus evasion),
High Guard (minus 50% atk but I dont have that much patk anyway, minus 10 crit rate but I have 150 bonus from Finestra. In return, I get bonus 150 block which is pretty high),
Spear Throw spam
Powerful Dragoon’s skills
Cyclone. One of the best skills from Swordsman. AoE, fast animation, hits hard, overheat, somewhat an acceptable cooldown.
Deeds of Valor might be not much of a use if you have a lot of evasion (you can evade physical atk mobs), but magical mobs can still hurt you.
Double Pay Earn for double exp and drop rate. Why not? Especially you are a PvE guy.
Yes, all Dragoon’s skills work with 1handed spear.
IMO, all Dragoon’s skills except Gae Bulg is great. They are all multi hit skills that deal more damage compared to Gae Bulg. Gae Bulg’s large burst damage is misleading. Moreover, you will rarely use Gae Bulg in PvE. You should check out the video of Gae Bulg in TOSBase. How can you hit all mobs that already surrounded you with Gae Bulg?
For Highlander, Cartar Stroke is useful until you hit c2 and grab Cross Cut-Skyliner. Moulinet is also a great addition because it’s multi hit.
Cata is best if you take it to c3.
I don’t really recommend cata c1 personally.
If you go Cata c1, then take Impale at lv 1 only, and then spend the rest on Steed Charge.
The skill points distribution for Hoplite is fine as it is. Peltasta is also fine as it is, but I think you forgot 4 skill points left. Spend them for Rim Blow.
For Swordsman, don’t take Concentrate more than 3 levels because it scales badly at late game. Grab GungHo to lv 4, Bash to lv 3 just for knockdown, and Pain Barrier at lv 5.
If you are using keyboard, hold C so you will enter a “Shield Guard” stance.
If you are using XBOX Controller, hold Y.
When you are in “Shield Guard” mode, your block will be increased by an insane amount, allows you to block most physical attacks.
Sorry, english is not my native. I mean, if i get ability to block almost any incoming physical attack without any penalties it’s seems weird, because must be any downgrades for such bonus.
Understand. And what about evasion - magic attacks cannot be blocked, but can i evade it? As i understand pelt-hopl tank is pure blocking tank, and pelt-fencer rely more on evade. Am i right?
How about tank dps? Swordman>peltasta>hoplite c3>doppel c1>shinobi, dex is enough for hit, other stat full con. Does this build get to do enough damage with deeds over valor and clone to boast dmg? How about its tank capability?
The question is imo “how distribute stats for tanking build to be able to make some damage” i think =)
It’s a teorycrafting, but i think that taking dopel C1 instead of peltasta C2 will reduce your tanking and CC abilities because of no high guard and swashbuckling only 5 instead 10, So, you will tank worse than others tanky swordy, who take peltasta C2 and in same time still make damage worse than most of melee dd.
How important is high guard? It significantly reduce our attack. I never try tank path before. Without priest stone skin, high guard, can we still tank effectively?
By becoming tank dps, i expect it to be tanker with capabilities of doing some damage. Of course, not as high as other melee dps, but much better than tanker damage.
From what i see, current tanker only swasbuckling, high guard and doing nothing at all. Doesnt it just boring doing 2skill only throughout full run dungeon. Thats why i thought, instead of doing nothing, much better doing some damage. I thought it will be cool if swashbuckling mobs, then cyclone, spear throw, bunshin no jutsu, kunai. With linker, it will be awesome. With so many mobs attack u, sure deeds over valor will activate to lvl5. Of course, all this just my imagination and theorycrafting.
So whats the best tank built again? I haven’t been able to find it online… I mean I get how going 100% tank will not help you deal any damage to maintain aggro, so what would be the best combination?
swordsman c1 > peltasta c2 and then what? and what would be fun to play and cool to look at as well?
Erokhi offered SwordC1-PeltC1-HopliteC1-C2-C3-PeltC1-Dragoon - it’s a pure shield build with good tanking abilities, decent critrate and some powerful dragoon skills
Also i think fencer tank viable too, it will be something like SwordC1-PeltC1-HighC1-C2-C3-DoppelC1-FencerC1. This build have less block and critrate, but have more damage dealing potential (crosscut-skyliner combo, cyclone) and decent evade boost (50% from lunge).
I think mobile tank like SwordC1-PeltC1-HopliteC1-CataC1-C2-C3-Dragoon can bee good to in term of great mobility, few CC and good aoe skills.
Also, erokhi told that rodelero can be good choise for decent CC abilities, but i think it’s more PvP stuff than PvE.
For mention, all my opinions it’s a theorycrafting, i’m not experienced ToS player - it’s just a conclusions based on all a have read and all that was told in this topic.
We talk a lot about skill builds, but no mention stat build at all. What statbuild will be acceptable: only full con, or con/str, str/con or maybe con/str/dex? And how choose a ratio? I fiound that with con 2/str 1 resulting str and con was almost equal at 250 lvl.
Another question - what about investing some stat in spr for sp boost, i find that if invest 1 point in spr for every 9 points spent, it gave almost 20% more sp compared to 0 points invested in spr. Will it worth it or sword don’t need that boost?
And what about dex? how much i shall invest in it to feel comfortable in PvE in terms of hitting things.
