Square or round, I think it’s just same. We’re looking for the picture, not the square or round frame at all.

I think there cute most elements of a forum are straight lines and squares so it makes the round avatars stand out.

but you’re omitting information by using round avatars.
well, because you are submitting / they allow you to upload a rectangle, which actually makes it easier for the user. there are user here, that takes advantage of it and let the avatar look like its not round (I have seen a yoshi egg, which looked awesome and different, as it played around witht the avatar format).
Artistically i think they fit into the page better than having hard edges. I really like the small touches like this
