Rotating camera

It does not look bad at all… I would love to see these like angles because it give more depth to the areas…

Well the game is originally designed for keyboard controls so anything other than a 90 degree camera snap wouldn’t really work. Plus having a fixed camera allows easier map creation as you don’t have to render it from different angles, plus it doesn’t seem necessary. It would only be a problem if the foreground was in the way and so far I have no run into that issue. While it would be nice to see the maps from a different angle, it’s really not needed and would just take longer for new areas to be released.

Yeah u are right but It would still nice to rotating camera with mouse just for looking beautiful landscapes… Also It seems those map are rendered from different angles…

R u a developer? Camera fix is one of the greatest mistake in ToS. And one of many things why this game IS NOT the ragnarok sucessor, as they said.

I guess they want this to turn-out as MMORPG game with some MOBA game elements.

C’mon let’s set aside the old game… I’m a Ragna fan myself… Successor or not the important thing is it has same art style as Ragnarok. No need for official claim that this is bla bla bla successor of this game bla bla bla, it’s more like how you define it yourself. I feel they just don’t want to market those Ragnarok old Players but also those who never tried Ragnarok. These player would say, “WHT is Ragnarok? I dunno this I’m outta here.” hope you readers get what I mean.

Just my opinion.

Exactly! This game is not ragnarok

So not being able to turn the camera is gonna kill ToS? Is that what you’re trying to say? It’s no issue at all. Top down games don’t need an adjustable camera.

its fine the way it is

Wouldnt Ragnorok 2 be the successor to Ragnorok 1? (a little occam’s razor for everyone btw fyi)

why do people say this is the successor to Ragnorak? i get it has the same spirit, but camera angles isn’t a game changer/deal breaker.

The rotating camera would be nice since it’s always a pleasure to explore every bit of details in the game. It’s up to developer however but for me the game is fine just the way it is.

@dreamer_littlenemo Because due to the fact that Kim Hakkyu said that ToS is a spiritual successor to Ragnarok 1. For RO2, it wasn’t the real version of the original Ragnarok. People misunderstood the statement Kim Hakkyu made saying that this game is Ragnarok version etc. but it’s not. People really need to stop bringing Ragnarok to ToS as both game is in a league of their own.

yeah i agree. end the comparisons if needed. but honestly, just because someone says spiritual successor it doesnt mean the have to be 100% alike. you know what i mean? i think ppl get touchy about different subjects, so like if i say something is the successor but you really really like ABC feature and the new game doesn’t have it you are going to get on your soapbox etc.

well i think with the rotating camera angles, it might make the game clunky and less cartoony. i mean, take for example ragnorok 2. it is clunky as hell. Well, rotating might make it lose its cartoon look. i think once you start rotating, the game becomes 3-D and no longer 2.5D and it will lose the cartoon styling, and become like polygonal looking. we got any graphics people here that can chime in? can you have a 3d game but keep it looking SNES RPG looking?

I think you can do a camera angle switch. like i press x button and now im at a different angle, say for example facing NW, and then i press X again and im at NE. that way can retain the SNES RPG look i think.

I would love a camera angle switch to allow for more exploration. It’s fun to see a game from different perspectives, removing camera rotation hurts the ability to do this. When I played beta, that was my only real gripe besides lack of customization with skin colors, eye colors, etc. It sounds cute in concept to describe the game as a ‘storybook’ with a fixed camera, but in reality it feels limited. I’m sure it affects some more than others as seen in this thread, it wasn’t something I expected to affect me so much.

It would really be sad to see the same screenshots featuring the same places from the saaame angle over and over, and I think would become even more redundant as the game ages. Didn’t think this feature would make such a difference to me, but once I played the beta I realized just how important camera rotation is. It may also help detract from the map linearity that is brought up a bit on the forum from others. Overall, I highly doubt they’ll change it though at this point, it would have been nice to keep it in, imo.

my question was could they? i mean could they technically have a rotating camera and retain the cartoony graphics exactly as they are? i think they can’t actually maintain storybook graphics if they go 3D. im pretty sure rotating camera means 3D. the game is 2.5D. think of diablo 1, 2, & 3. they can’t actually make it 3D. you know what i mean?

if you want a rotating camera you are basically saying, give me a 3D game. (i.e. ragnorok 2, which exists and sucks)

The developers meant for TOS to be remniscient of old RPGs like Final Fantasy X where the the background is static. If they wanted players to have rotating cameras, they would’ve designed the game for that from the get-go. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just a different game design.

I think the interview that best applies to this thread is here to shed more light on the topic: http://blog.treeofsavior.com/en/?p=134

The purpose of making the game’s lack of camera rotation:

Q) So quarter view was not just selected to reminisce about the old, classic games.

A) No. Classical designs are just methods and not our objective. To
enhance visibility, we even removed angle rotations which were available
in the earlier version. We wanted players to really immerse into their
characters so as we develop the game, characters’ representations became
more and more simple.

Q) Are there any differences in the art concept of TOS compared with the other games?

A) We wanted to give players a feeling that TOS is like a moving fairy
tale book or pop-up book so most of the textures are actually hand drawn
by our designers.

And while this sounds really awesome in concept, IDK for some people it just doesn’t work. It isn’t totally game-breaking and I’ll still play (obviously), I didn’t realize how much it would affect me until I hopped in the beta. I have no idea if they can re-add the rotation back, clearly it used to be there in an earlier incarnation of the game as referenced by the dev in that interview.

It would be so nice to have camera rotation, just highly doubt they’d enable it at this stage. But who knows with how they’ve tinkered around with major game aspects like class advancement paths in the past few days and even enabled mouse movement for us despite interviews justifying why they wouldn’t.

In that case, there’s not much need for a rotating camera if the developers have made it so everything’s viewable from one angle. Heck, there are people who play RO and aren’t aware you can rotate the camera in that game, so I can see where the developers are coming from. I don’t think there’s a MMO out there that tells you about the rotating camera in its tutorials, so even if they put it in, how many people would be aware of it to use it?

OP’s thread is about enabling it to give the game more depth to areas, not about necessity. In reality, it’s not necessary at all and such a camera rotation function would benefit some more than others, it would be beneficial to me but is demonstrated to not matter to other posters.

And man, I can’t imagine not knowing about camera rotation in RO when that game is designed with rotation in mind. For a point I played RO with a touchpad which didn’t fully work with the game and thus couldn’t rotate my camera at all. For months, I was stuck being unable to see different aspects of the game, such as the monster hiding in my blind spot and one-shotting me, the loot that ended up out of my line of sight, among other problems.

/At least/ ToS has functions in mind that more or less intelligently remedy some of these issues. In the beta, if you move near a tree that would block your view, it disappears/fades most of the time. When it didn’t work, it was bothersome. It’s also frustrating to have your character suddenly concealed by the massive boss, and you can’t pan your camera to see if they’re standing in AoE, etc. It would be a nice way to add more control over viewing your surroundings via camera rotation, but that’s a bit beside the point of OP’s thread.

Awsome, i hope u r not trolling :grinning:

I think that we could have na option to auto-rottation. It can be possible at the same time u can use your keyboard…
