if they dont make the hunter pets have skills of their own then they failed. I mean camon IMC , hunter pets should be diferent then everyone elses , a buff that increases his move speed really? They should just teleport to us once they are outside the scree like any summon!
Also, only 1 pet? What kind of hunter doesn’t have pet summoning related skills? Like seriously, every hunter in every game works like a pokemon master, get on with the times already!
Pets used to have auto-Rush once every few seconds in CBT/OBT. Even on non-hunter classes (pet used Rush level 0 for little to no damage), but it was very effective on Hunters. Then they decided to remove that ability and dumbed down pet’s AI.
At some point they gave auto-skill use for Falcons, but for some reason hunter’s Pets didnt get same treatment.
For hunters to be decent:
I probably missed a thing or two, but should they implement all of above - then hunter will be at least playable again.

Let us use multiple companions, perhaps a maximum of 4 (excluding hawk) and also let us map skills per companion, so we can chain skills instead of waiting for the companion to finish the one skill.
Archers in general still need care, but certainly Hunter and Scout are in desperate need

If you read the new Popolion Post with care, you could’ve read between the lines that they do not plan to overhaul the Class just yet, otherwise they wouldn’t be so much against introducing more companion-related Classes.
As long as the companion system is as bad as it is right now, there will be sadly no help for Hunter incoming soon, because the companion control is what makes Hunter so pathetic in the first place.
I guess the next approach for Hunter will be something like the new lvl 360 Summoner accessory set from the former fantasy library raid.
Fix the Class issues with items instead of balancing/making the skills/attributes/Class-related systems actually useful.
Future is looking very grim for Hunter right now.
I think another of the big problems for Hunters is how pet HP works. Let’s say you bring your pet to… Velcoffer raid. I guess more than 90% of time you’d have a dead companion and 1-3 wasted ranks.
Maybe we could talk about transcending armors to put on a pet… but I think that’s kind of way too much.
Technically you can train HP for silver, put HP increasing items with HP gems. Training itself can be changed to basic stats instead of derivatives and two 2-handed weapons is plenty of slots for green gems if you want crits.
^ Plenty of ways to improve hunter’s experience that do not require completely re-thinking class mechanics.
Edit: i remembered what i have forgotten!
best is 2x Solmiki Robe since companions also gain sub-stats via main stats now.
2x 84 CON = 168 CON, which should boost the HP of the companion by 13k or more.
Add two 70+ CON two-handed weapons on top and we’re talking about ~ 25k additional HP.
The defence value is also quite good. Another choice would be primus gears with CON,DEX and block/evasion, but either way, if you have to invest so much extra money on a companion armor just to have it survive normal PVE content, that’s hilarious.
Maybe they could add an option that the companion also shares all the buffs you recieve (especially crucial because of Pardoner defence buffs and Swift Step) as it’d allow the companion to survive even with a low HP pool.
Reworking Praise into a buff share could potentially solve this problem.
i wouldn’t call Velcoffer a “normal” PvE content. If you have to carefully prepare your character for it why would Pet be any different (that also takes character slot)? And you can easily restore all its HP with food.
Tbh, here you’re basically excluding the very option of Hunter being any high-end content even for higher ranks where we could have another Velcoffer-like dungeon, demon lords, possibly the new unique raid, high guild level raids. No matter how much HP your pet have, if your pet dies within 1-3 hits it becomes useless.
I’m not saying like, you can’t make it work. Maybe going whale and getting 2 T10 armors on your pet will save you - and IMHO this should not be the requirement to make your class playable, but any class that has 3 ranks and its own mechanic makes itself utterly useless on a given content just because they do too much damage has something wrong with it.
The closest situation we have is Sorcerer/Necro which are pretty hard to make viable for Velcoffer/etc, but IMO they’re on a league of their own and have their own problems.
Another example of bad pet mechanic is: mounted classes can get temporarily locked out of 3+ ranks because too many monsters are spam-attacking a low HP pet and you can’t do nothing about it. But at least this isn’t something you need to deal with in every combat like with hunters.
I wasn’t really talking about Velcoffer.
Anything starting from Elite Monster hunting over level 300 dungeon, 330 raid, Earth Tower to level 340 Hunting Grounds are pretty much off-limits for Hunter unless you highly invest into very specific gear for the companion.
Oh, and I should not forget to mention that you need a premium companion, otherwise you’ll only have half the equipment slots (which heavily cripples the survivability and possible damage capabilities;
so you need to spend twice, on companion and character slot, unless you want to use the free penguin…) to make the character viable.
Just GET RID OF AI. The falcon works SO WELL as a pet. The next in line would be deiv owl statues followed by pied piper mice. They don’t “think” to act and ONLY do what they are told.
This is the pep talk I think every deiv gives their owls as they are carving them.

By the way, it would be cool if they gave Diev C3 an attribute for Carve Attack to rotate Owl Statues (use carve in front of them to rotate CW and behind them to rotate CCW).
As for Hunter, maybe they haven’t reworked it yet because they have something being prepared for companions on general? It must be the reason why we don’t have Shepherd yet too.
AI attached to something controlled by the player is bad. This is true for ToS (but not all games, some games actually make it work) because ToS AI is bad. Plain and simple.
If it were possible (which it is) I would like to control the pet myself even if it meant leaving my own body vulnerable. Like combining sadhu OOB (roots you in place to control your astral body) and sorc riding (gaining control of summon).
Again; like every other suggestion I’ve made, I will only ever push for something that is already implemented somewhere else in the game already. Get a sadhu and a sorc together and have their kid be the new hunter.
ONLY if they lift up that stupid rule of having to buy a character slot for each pet… imagine how expensive would be to have a class like that
I definitely think removing Hunter pet’s AI would help a lot, making it more like Falc (where the pet would follow through with an attack, regardless of if it hits anything or not).
Kind of a weird idea, but it would be neat if they made Hunter skills usable while mounted too.
Right now, skill options are somewhat limited for mounted combat (did they even make Gu pot and Jincan usable on a mount yet? for real tho…) to a few classes and skills within them.
IMO it would be pretty cool for a mounted Rush Dog to become a running charge, and the other attacks to be small aoes in front of you.
Well Blizzard and Anet made it so pets have a passive called avoidance that reduces aoe damage by 90% , so they essentially only have to worry about being target by the boss itself ( pulling aggroh).
I think It’s a great idea because it is pretty hard to control AI and since you need your pet alive for your skills It is QoL that he stays alive , If the class is about having a pet then you should never be required to spends huge amounts of extra cash to get a QoL improvement.
