I’m surprised with the amount of contradiction, stubbornness and closed minded views I have read on the subject of rank reset.
IMO Rank reset should be available.
Should it be excessively easy? No.
Am I’m suggesting a potion to make your life easy? No.
I suggest developing a system that allows class experimentation to some extent. without being forced to reroll a whole character…
Balance is possible. thinking otherwise is an handicap view.
the following are the most common against arguments:
- 1: it would break the end game because everyone would respec to the same optimal path. thus reducing diversity.
- 2: it would make the game “easy”.
- 3: any class can work to some extent in the end.
- 4: lack of planing/knowledge of the game.
- 5: promotes laziness
- 6: hurts gratification of raising a character, and intensifies the focus on endgame alone
- 7: old school gaming
there are a few more that are not even worth mentioning…
I have to say that a few of this make some sense and indeed hold some truth. However, one must consider the whole and not just the parts…
issues with those arguments:
- 1: this argument implies that the game is unbalanced, and that is it utterly clear of which are the best builds for all situations. it also implies that everyone is a clone incapable of using their own brains to make decisions. Also I Completely disagree with the idea that it would reduce diversity. if anything, it would increase it. allowing players to experiment (to some extent) is what creates diversity not the other way around. I think that the current system actually reduces diversity. hard-core players will just reroll, players who are a bit less hard-core might stick with their choices for a while but eventually get demotivated because of the late realisation that a slightly different path could improve their builds. casual players will just rage their asses off because they naturally do not have the time nor patience to just reroll after realising they made a mistake(it is only human to make mistakes… Only fools think otherwise). meaning only players that are still proud of their builds will be playing endgame. This will probably be builds which follow the “standard”.
- 2: There is indeed some relation. but it’s not as simple as I spent 1000h on this build(including rerolls) so I’m badass… you can indeed equate to some extent like perseverance, the time it takes to achieve something definitely increases its value, no doubt. and it can also be considered more difficult simply because of how much time it takes to get. but difficulty can have a lot more to it then simple perseverance. Actually a game that relies heavily or solely on perseverance to achieve difficulty reveals poor design and lack of ideas…
- 3: that might be true, but that does not remove the fact that you might become quite useless, or have other issues that are not even related to late game… like the uncomfortable feeling or being stuck with that choice while you could have made a slightly different one. it might not even have the purpose of making you more effective in pve or pvp, you might simply realise that you actually need a better tool/skill to farm or to be more helpful to your guild by providing buffs or or making more silver… or whatever really… even the fact that each class has its own costume might have impact on the choices…
- 4: this argument… Either we are humanoid automatons capable of processing every single variable to determine the best outcome for our own happiness including future currently non existing variables. or hard-core players with a lot of time. or once again we are just mindless clones coping builds from someone else (hard-core player or automaton). or we are capable of simply being ok with wrong passed choices even though we are aware their could be better, implying that excitement about experimenting classes is detrimental. notice the detail i am pointing out happiness not performance. It’s not about achieving the ultimate best performance, its about being happy/comfortable/satisfied with your choices. heck you might even purposely choose an unusual path just to prove you can make it work! That to me is Fun. and actually I would probably be more inclined to try crazy builds in late game because of the open options…
- 5: assuming this… It’s s a close minded view. one can create an algorithm that allows change, yet requires work for it.
- 6: this could be true. specially for those who have already sinked a lot of time into the game. it is however also a selfish view. it basically promotes the idea that only hard-core players should take this game seriously. Also, once again, it’s dependant on the reset algorith and thus close minded.
- 7: this is the view of players who are heavily against how easy games have become this days. I am not an hard-core player, yet I agree with this one 100%. Indeed games this days are mostly ruined due to how easy they are. However, this brings back point 2. the difficulty of the game does not need to be compromised just because players are allowed adjust their class choices. It’s definitely affected to some extent no doubt. but assuming this, it would again mean that the game is unbalanced, that there is one clear path best for every purpose and that everyone is aware of it. That is most certainly not the case.
also, again, there are many different ways to improve difficulty other then simple time sink. Actually for old school gaming, there a tons of games that were not that long, but were so f***in difficult that it would take days and days of SKILL improvement to beat them.
once again as a final note, we are not robots, we are not capable of seeing the future and we are certainly not perfect. we are human. human make mistakes and a game that punishes the possibility of mistakes this heavily, leads to unnecessary frustration and corrupted ideas of difficulty.
also worth notice that if your gonna spend money on cosmetics only to realise you need to reroll and there is no way to pass that investment to the new character is utter Bull s****…
I encourage reply and feedback, but please do so with logical arguments.
