Rank 6 Decision after Pelta - High3, should I Doppel or Fencer?

As the title says, struggling whether I should choose Doppel or Fencer to complete out the build (just reached class lvl 15 on my rank 5).

I do know some of the pros and cons of each, but need some extra opinions. First of all, this character will be purely PvE focused.

Just my own thoughts while leveling:
-I did enjoy doing some tanking (I think 90% of the time I tank in a random party… although its more of tank until CCs then start doing some damage as well)
-Did see the lack of AoE dps (but didn’t feel like I was getting outdpsed by Barbarians when I was doing instances, if you can proc bleed obviously)
-I did pick highlander over barbarian because I didn’t want to stay idle too long after I busted out all of my spells.

Now I don’t know what would be better to go for. Fencer or Doppel from this point. What do you guys think?

Edit: Stat and skill relocation is possible for me so that shouldn’t really restrict me in anyway. Did try to 2:1 on Str:Dex though.

i think coz u enjoy tank go for fencer is best coz alot of dodge and block from skill itself

That is a valid point. I just seem to have problems killing packs though, but if fencer can kill single units asap or I can just get party members doing the aoe or have a linker, I guess it does not matter if I can’t aoe…

Go Doppel if you’re planning to tank with Peltasta and keeping your shield because Doppel Cyclone has an extremely large AOE attack ratio and that Fencers have this attribute that increases their pierce damage by % on skills when not using an offhand dagger/shield/artifact which will make you commit to weapon switching to take advantage of

Then again, the decision is yours to make.

Yeah, it’s just that I feel cyclone is all Doppel has going for them where as with Fencer you have more tools to use when you get circle 2 on it.

As for weapon switching, not sure if you are saying you can’t keep a shield as a Fencer because I’m know you can just swap back and forth for both classes… (just means it will be shield equip and not equip, and I would just add dagger for extra dps if they are not weak against pierce)

I meant this

Yes, I know you mean that. Also, in your initial response you said I should go Doppel to tank with peltasta or Fencer to tank with peltasta. Kind of confusing to me now.

I’m just stating the pros and cons of taking either and sorry to confuse you there.

The easy choice to do I guess is if you want Burst or Sustain. Also, don’t forget to take into account that most HL3 Skills are slash which does neat synergy with Fencer Lunge.

did @tsigetartseht say mean if u go dopper u don’t waste the passive atk from fencer when u tank with shield and have lot of aoe but if u got fancer u got less aoe but more tanky from dodge and block

Yeah exactly
You may get more dodge and block by going Fencer and keeping the shield but you will miss out the % increase of pierce type attacks when not wearing anything on the other hand/off-hand. Also, keep in mind that magic attacks cannot be blocked/dodged.

On Doppel though, you get to keep the shield and not be bothered by weapon swapping at all. Weapon swapping is entirely lag/ping dependent so it’s something to consider.

Ah okay. Now I get it. It’s just that I myself was going to be using swapping anyways for both regardless to maximize damage when not tanking. There definitely is a frame drop when you try to weapon swap for me which is annoying, but I have managed to do it enough that I’m used to it.

I guess one more advantage I thought of right now for Fencer is that since I have highlander c3, I can do world bosses a lot better compared to doppel if I can stack multiple debuffs.

Well, I’ll think about it until tomorrow and see what I’ll pick in the end. Thanks to you guys though.

Unless you go C2 of Doppel and all of those C2 skills will require to use 2H Sword?

Wow, damn, good to know. Had no idea that you can’t use anything on off-had for this to work, because in Skill Simulator this skill’s description states Rapier+Shield as one of available options, just like all other Fencer’s skills. Guess it’s outdated.

PS: I’m in a similar situation and trying to decide between Fencer and Doppel as my class 6+7. I went 1 Peltasta + 3 Barbarian so far. Wanted to be a DPS that can also tank bosses fairly well.

Oh I never checked Doppel C2 much cause it’s no longer my path of interest but good to know xD

Well for one I personally think that tanking bosses is only limited to Physical types and you need to keep on running around avoiding boss attacks while you get to keep the aggro off your party mates. Not unless you’re like a high CON build with a pretty skilled healer, you can definitely face tank everything :joy:

But since you’re taking DPS in consideration as well then that complicates things. How do you see yourself as a tanker? Block with timing or evasive maneuvers tanking?

Was thinking about timing shield blocking (for those attacks that are possible to block) and well timed Fencer’s Flanconnade for attacks that can’t be blocked. And spam DPS skills all the other time.

Running around is good but I think it’s safer to prevent bosses from facing towards other party members, so they won’t accidentally get hit by some frontal attack.

But I’m not sure that Flanconnade even works that way and what kind of attacks it can guard, cause this is my first melee character. Used to play mage mostly, but as mage I always ended up being the tank anyway, haha (due to highest DPS).

Wuuut battle mage tanker so stronk
Well regarding being able to block it or not may entirely depend on your block stat and the enemy’s block penetration.
Since you are seeing yourself as a standing tank using shield block then I guess your best option is fencer indeed.
