I have read that Doppels can use 2 handed spears. But do I have to go Cata to be able to use handed spears first or can I do something like sword->sword->Hoplite->Hoplite->Hoplite->Doppel and use 2 handed spears?

Cata seems good but I was trying to think of a different route for dopple besides barb. But it seems like barb is the only way currently.
