INTRODUCTION

WARNING:

Be warned!, swordsman PvP builds needs heavy investment to be competitive. Swordsman is one of the hardest class to play in terms of PvP. As the only melee-by-nature class in PVP, we swordsman need to combine positioning, aiming, timing and a good ping, to outplay other classes with over powered buffs compared to our mediocre buffs, these peeps also have stronger CCs as well, not only that! these meta maniacs could just click a few magic buttons or drop absurd ticking AoEs and be done with us. Thus, given all that disadvantages, you need too love and have fun with the class and invest heavy for this build to work.

ABOUT THE BUILD:

The build originated from kToS which i copied pre-R8. This is a strictly PVP path for mounted swordsman, it really sucks in PVE, well not really but it doesn’t do well. Lancer class has been explicitly stated to be a PVP class so we could expect more from next circles, they can only wield 2H spear weapons.

How does it compare to catagoon counterpart in TBL? As of now, in terms of killing capabilities catagoon outshines catalansair, but in terms of utility, offensive support (hook’s CC, crush’s decrease physical defense) and defensive support (joust’s silence and break circle, crush’s decrease physical damage), catalansair performs better, it also have better survivability against fellow physical classes with the help of initiate buff (enables blocking). With that, catalansair can be exposed to more situational circumstances than the killing machine catagoon.

It is quite similar to other cataphract builds having the swordsman C3 > cataphract C3 for core ranks, but instead of dragoon we go for lancer.

(http://www.tosbase.com/game/classes/Swordsman/) - From rank 1 to rank 3, this core class is primarily for offensive and defensive utilities that will synergize with the next classes; ‘pain barrier’ makes us less likely to trip while pouncing around, it goes well with Cataphract’s high mobilitiy, ‘restrain’ can momentarily disable an enemy, it gives an opening for a follow up skill. Both skills will aid lancer combos land easier.

[ Cataphract ] - Then, from rank 4 to rank 6, we take this core class for it’s high mobility and offensive utilities; this class offers ‘trot’ which is currently the best mobility buff, gives us the ability to engage in and out of battles, and ‘rush’, it is arguably the best mobile physical damage in game, combined with ‘trot’ turns us into a deadly apache helicopter, this skill will be one of our main source of damage on combat, plus a trio of knockdown skills; ‘earthwave’, ‘doomspike’, and’steed charge’, and lastly ‘impale’, a one point wonder skill that can kidnap an enemy from their base, it can be situationally useful.

[ Corsair ] - For rank 7, we take this filler class mainly for the ‘iron hook’ which is in my opinion the best CC skill of swordsman tree, it also helps us land lancer skills easier. We can run around and hook like a mad cowboy. Also, the costume is also very good!

[ Lancer ] - Finally, for our main class we are taking this class from rank 8 to 10, Lancer is packed with offensive and defensive utilities as well; ‘crush’ can reduce enemies’ physical attack and defense by half, ‘joust’ breaks magic circles, and silences magic classes for a duration, ‘initiate’ gives us block penetrating ability and mysteriously ability to block physical damage, on circle 2, we will be able to dodge magic circles as well, and lastly, ‘unhoursing’ it unmounts mounted enemies, useful to cancel’s another cataphracts ‘trot’. With rank 9 and 10, the true potential of lancer is yet to be discovered.

STAT ALLOCATION

Since the stat rework, damage mitigation has become more challenging, stacking defenses, block and evasion has become less viable because of the new formulas.

FORMULAS TO CONSIDER:

Critical Chance % = (Critical Rate - Critical Resistance)^0.60
Evasion Chance % = (Evasion - Accuracy)^0.65
Block Chance % = (Block - Block Penetration)^0.70

example:

Evasion Chance:
49.12% = (900 evasion - 500 accuracy)^0.65

therefore, “dodge is at 50% rate with 400 difference”,


COUNTERS:

As a physical damage dealer we need to consider these damage mitigations against us, which are block and evasion. Unfortunately, we need to choose between two sides of the coin or somewhere in between, either be high STR to be effective against evasive enemies, or high DEX to counter high block enemies.

COUNTERING BLOCK:

Block is the easier to stack than evasion it also has a better formula, to be effective against high block enemies, specially against hoplite and peltasa builds, we need decent block penetration from DEX and/or yellow gems in gloves, thankfully we have initiate buff and cataphract’s +40% block penetration on 2H spear attribute to help us with that. It is given that high block enemies have high CON, therefore have high HP pool. Most of them are support clerics and mages, hoplite and/or peltasa builds.

COUNTERING EVASION:

Unlike block, evasion is more difficult to stack, to be effective against high evasion enemies, we need good accuracy from STR, transcended gloves, and/or green gem in gloves. Usually, high evasion enemies have low HP pool, since they tend to maximize their DEX leaving CON to minimum. Most of them are archers and DEX build swordsman/clerics.


STAT BUILDS:

With that, you can choose which stat build you want, I personally use “Concentrate” build, it’s your personal choice if you want to add CON and how many in any of these stat build.

“Gung Ho” build (FULL STR)
“High STR” build (2 STR: 1 DEX)
“Concentrate” build (FULL DEX)
“High DEX” build (1 STR: 2 DEX)

I have this exact build and it works well against other Catas and mounted classes in general.

Do you guys play mouse mode cuz of iron hook?

I still play keyboard, playing in mouse mode is a bit awkward because there’s no auto snap on target feature in this game, landing hook can be tricky with keyboard but it’s doable.

I like this build a lot, I have dueled against it awhile back and it was tough to beat! lol…I’m pretty sure I would lose against this build even now. I think you can combo iron hook into joust or steed charge w/o breaking the hook.

That is true, but you have to turn off steed charge’s knockbock first because the target will be tossed away lol. My main use for hook is to land my crush -> quantain combo more accurately, or offensive support. The good thing about hook is that it can’t be resisted, at least I have not seen it been resisted. The bad thing is that it hooks wrong targets like statues, minions or ice walls.
