Hello, I played this game long ago but decided to take hiatus while waiting for puppeteer class. Now i decided to go back to this game when i saw a Lancer.

But i think its a bad build not going for cata3
Any recommendations with class path/stat i should go for?

You said it, cata3 or no cata. We take cata3 for trot15 speed and pvp rush + restrain combo.
But fyi, cata is really bad for PvE right now. If your intention is PvP, that is fine though.
I went from SW2>Hop2>Cata3>Lance1 to SW2>Hop2>Squire3>Lancer1… (This is for PvE and support for my main char cleric)
With just SW2, HOP2 and Lance1, I can get (1) on leather bosses on salad runs and siaulai.
It is sad, but cata3 is just really that bad for PvE. All the skills drains your SP ALOT. Like so much SP you be a SP pot addict for pathetic damage. I might as well auto attack instead of using doomspike/earthwave/rush and just reposition myself and wait for my Hop2>Lance1 rotation off CD and burst again.
I’m in the process of resetting my cata3, and I was thinking at squire/lancer as well.
If you don’t mind, can you give some more info on how it works your build?
