The most versatile would be plate - which adds extra hp and phys resist. Mages have the same dmg on all armour types (except ghost) - the P/C/L depends on physical weapon type used (slash/pierce/smite(?)) - so only blunt weapon users will have increased dmg on you (though still affected by your increased phys resist).
