I don’t see any reason to waste dev and server resources on this. Plenty of VoIP solutions exist - it’s not hard to get a party of players into one of them for content where it’s necessary.
You can donwload talk talk haha then use it with your friend hahaha
In every suggestion thread there’s this retard saying: “It will just waste developer’s time”…
You need a lot of anti-griefing protection, volume control, and moderation on top of good quality and lots of bandwidth. Voice chat programs usually rely on passwords and private servers to deal with this, but a game has to do it on the fly. That’s really hard to do. Even Blizzard failed when they were testing voice chat in WoW.
A voice chat system like that in an MMORPG really needs automatic voice masking to make people sound like their characters. Nothing is worse than hearing Generic Teenage Guy Voice coming out of every character you meet. Well, OK, “OMG a girl” followed by half an hour of generic teenage guy voices freaking out about it is worse.
This is a good opportunity for a third party to build a really good service and sell it to game companies.
Sounds like an expensive investment for something that the community is split on.
It would be great to have this in-game but if it exhausts way too much server resources then it’s not really worth the risk.
No matter how much it will cost, as long as it works. Also, think as a “client”, you gonna pay for the game, you want to see the services. Just as that.
I’d love to be able to voice chat with my party the moment i join them, but it also needs a disable/mute button.
If they do plan to add it, they will probably make it peer-to-peer among party member to reduce consumption of the servers’ resources.
Frankly, it is really sad that there is such a backlash to the idea of a feature that can simply be disabled if not desired. Keep in mind we are playing a game that takes place in a world with MANY other players. 99.9% of them will not be participating in your voice chat server on TS, mumble, etc and sometimes the interactions with them will be too small to warrant telling them to download, install a third party client. Those small interactions add up though and can keep you interested in experiencing more than just a mindless grind. Having the ability to really connect with other real players in a way that only hearing their voice provides is seriously under appreciated. Encouraging communication in a world filled with many many players ISN’T A BAD THING and can create a much stronger sense of community if done correctly. Voice chat encourages communication. If you ONLY intend on playing with your friends… I mean…there are so many coop games that do action, story, etc better than most MMORPGS’s so I have to question if you are even really interesting in the MMO part of MMORPG.
inb4: but kids act dumb and say stuff that i dont like. A mute function for problematic people is obvious.
I agree 100% with the comment above (yanushi’s).
If I were a game creator I would invest so much in these social aspects because I know that people are willing to accept substandard aspects of the game as long as you can have a little bit of fun talking with people and coordinating stuff.
Of course it would be worthless if your target audience is 13-years-old kids, but if that’s the case the game will be ■■■■ anyway.
The thing is, people who are serious about a voice chat option pretty much already have a 3rd party client installed. If they don’t then generally they arent gonna use it in the first place. I’ve been playing MMO for a looooong time. And i know that if im gonna be playing a game that requires communication, i pretty much already have all my voice programs open waiting for the leader to give me their info to connect and talk. It literally takes me less then 30 seconds to jump in. Its easy to learn and setup yet people are unwilling to do it because they’ve never done it before, but if they take the time they will be better off.
You’re right, but the whole point is: New people shouldn’t be serious about voice chat (or about anything). It’s the game’s job to offer these options to new players so that they can become more serious and involved.
I’m thinking of CS:GO voicechat as a good example for what the OP wants.
CS:GO
- player connects to the game, automatically have a voicechat for the team (in matchmaking at least).
- players have the option to mute/unmute/disable/report the players(if there is harrassment or being annoying).
- players can still chat even having a voicechat so if there is no headphones/mic, they can still communicate with the team.
What the OP wants
- player joins the party, automatically have a voicechat to communicate to the party.
- player can mute/unmute/disable/report the players(if there is harrassment or being annoying).
- players can still use chat so others who don’t have voicechat on can still communicate.
just saying what i’m thinking.
mew_123s, I really think you are missing the point. In real life, you dont walk up to someone on the street and point a sign at them that says “download this app to talk to me”. Interactions should happen naturally. I think those natural interactions when done well can bring a game to life. Hell, voice chat that is based on character proximity is what my ideal MMO will have and it looks like that might never happen due to strong naysayers. So many people are still so stuck in old habits that they forget they are playing a game that OTHER random people also exist in.
I have been playing MMOs for a long time too. I don’t feel that that is a qualifier for an opinion.
TLDR; You should expect to HAVE TO interact with people in an MMORPG, otherwise you should just play an RPG or coop game with friends.
i vote for no for built in VC. good if use for guild/friend but not with stranger. whats wrong chat using keyboard? arent implement this divide community since it will be mandatory to use? dont give me crap about it wont. look at EU/NA MMO, teamspeak are mostly mandatory to use now THAT for guild. now think what happen if TOS implement build in VC? not talking?KICK. want to join this dungeon but dont want to talk?KICK
so whats wrong if those who want to use download teamspeak etc etc?
I think your a little paranoid. Neverwinter has in-game voice chat, and I’ve never seen it enforced for party play, or a requirement parties have.
That being said, I wouldn’t mind it as long as there is an option to turn it off or mute individuals.
It seems like a fun idea to add to the fray that ToS brings. VOIP, as a third party program works fine, but for those that will join a party and then have everyone join the TS/Vent/VC it’s tedious, Steam is an option that can be used. But coming from the game it self makes it a more stable and usable to everyone. ToS involves large amounts of grinding and in a party to make it more efficient so why not chat it up why your are key punching and jumping to get those couple levels you need to quest a little more. If players don’t wish to use it, then they don’t but nevertheless it will add a social aspect to the game on top of all the other aspects that it all ready has.
Just implement a “push to talk” just like dota 2.
