Playing a regional server from a different region

Hey all,

I have searched the forums and FAQ, but the information regarding my friend’s situation below is conflicting:

He is a Singaporean currently studying in the US and will be moving between Singapore and US frequently every year. Will he be able to play the SEA server from the US?

3 Options

  1. No VPN but able to play
  2. VPN to reduce lag and able to play
  3. Regional block on SEA server. VPN required to play. Does the VPN warrant a steam ban?

I hope to obtain a concrete answer to my question above, which will serve as a useful reference for others with the same situation.

Thanks!

in short, yes. (but then again, Telsiai is in poor shape right now.)

it is my understanding that none of the Steam servers use region-blocking, and -could- be played from anywhere. (i am in NA and i can connect to each server, currently.) that said, lag will probably be an issue.

it is my understanding that the various VPN services popular with gamers are not ban-worthy, however, someone might use them for activities that -are- bannable, and thus the service -might- get dinged, in extreme cases. that said, it seems that a lot of people are using these services currently for various reasons, so it -appears- to work and be ok?

but…

it is YOUR understanding that i am not actually an official rep of IMC, and nothing i say about what is or isn’t bannable actually holds any weight, if they decide to say something different :stuck_out_tongue:
