Pick a Shield Class?

I am interested in starting this game, but since I was not part of the closed beta I am a bit at loss for what builds to go for. I am interested in making a swordsman class, my favorite playing style is playing an innately tanky character, usually with a shield and focusing on str instead of con/hp. Any recommendations?

i guess you can go to peltasta and then hoplite, you can use 1 hand spear and have a shield, hoplites also got one block buff to make you a bit more tank

You can focus on DEX STR while collecting gears that provide bonus HP such as plate armor.
