I don’t know if its illegal but I saw some people just standing around on a location where mobs spawn and just stand there for a while. When a mob approach him, his pet/companion will attack it.

This is a common strategy to AFK farm in the low levels really but this will hardly work in the future as the companion falls off in damage at high levels.
