Paid - Download - Started the game, then

Hey there, i have some weird problem. Before people start flaming this topic, i need you to read id carefully.

I bought the game yesterday. Downloaded and installed.
Once i run the game. I KNOW ITS NOT OUT YET…
My computer start making weird noises. I have no idea where it comes from too.
Like a squilling noise from graphic card or my hard drive. This is something wrong. I have uninstalled- REDOWNLOADED. Installed again, the game lunches no problem, but once i hit the screen with the server selection, my computer start the noises out of no where. When i click Credits, the noise seems to go softer but when i change page on credit page, its seems that the noise keep changing.
That is my computer specs.
i5-4460 @ 3.2ghz
8gb ram ddr3
Directx 11

Nvidia GEFORCE GTX 970, graphic card and everything on my computer is up to date.

I am runing all end games on ultra graphics with mostly 100FPS + and never had this kind of noise.

Try play a music and see if still do that, reset to default the sound card settings just in case there is something messed up on the equalizer, install the DirectX in the game folder (Steam\steamapps\common\TreeOfSavior\release\patch\DirectX10), check he speakers plug on the back of the case to see if it is well plugged.

Yeh done that, installed dx10 too. But problem dosent come from speekers. But from inside of my box… thats why it is weird

i will upload a video with the sound.

I wonder if it’s caused by the conflicting new NVIDIA sound drivers. I had similar issues when updating to the GTX 970 new drivers. The gpu fan would rev up really fast and sometimes go to black screen, resulting in a PC restart. I had to disable NVIDIA HD Audio and NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (in Device Manager) and set the Realtek HD sound drivers as default. Probably not the issue in your case, but I figured I mention it.

I have tryed to disable those 2, run the game. Having same noise.

That’s called Coil Whine (look it up).

Some GPUs do that sound when they’re pushed to the limit. I think the reason it’s pushed like that is because there’s no FPS limiter in ToS and your card must run the login screen at incredibly high FPS.

Solutions:

  • Enable Vsync or force it in your Nvidia control panel. It will cap FPS and “calm down” your GPU.
  • If you don’t want to use Vsync (understandable, as it adds input delay) You can use a framerate limiter, such as Nvidia Inspector: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH9D__g1yqs

It’s also possible the problem vanishes on its own as soon as you get ingame, and only does it on the login screen.

If it is not from the speakers it could be from the motherboard speaker, something related with software or hardware, just in case, take a look in the black and yellow power cables that goes over the cooler, i couldn’t see well but they seem to be touching the processor cooler fan.
Make sure your GPU is not overclocked sometimes it does cause problems, specially with factory stock drivers like the ones from Nvidia. If you can get updated driver from the Video Card manufacturer is better for overclocking.

Pretty much this. There once was a similar problem with Starcraft2’s title screen frying video cards due to static image that was rendered at 300+ FPS. Vsync or any other manual fps limiter should help.

Yes i think you are right, i guess i will wait for game release before playing with my settings. My fps keep going 800+ on the login screen. I have played the Closed Beta’s and had no issue with my computer.

You can quickly take a look in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\TreeOfSavior\release\user.xml

<Resolution mode="1" width="1920" height="1080" BitPerPixel="32" VSync="1"/>

Make sure that VSync="1"

Nvidia Inspector is quite easy to use and you can undo any change so it won’t mess up your ToS.

In that case go to Steam\steamapps\common\TreeOfSavior\release open the user.xml file in the notepad or other text editor and change VSync=“0” to VSync=“1” save it and test to see if it stop, if not wait until the game is ok to play to do it on the options.

Note that you might need to run notepad as admin because of the folder restrictions.

Thankyou, works perfectly now.

Nice, now is just the waiting game LOL.

While there is a (temporary, because not everyone likes to play with vsync on) solution, this issue still needs IMC attention to fix it before problems with user hardware start to appear after release.

Good idea to have the attention. Because im pretty sure not the first and not the last who is going to have this problem.

Glad you got this addressed, just want to add my experience with coil whine:

Coil whine is typically considered a defect in your card. I had to return my card twice before I got one without a headache inducing coil whine at normal framerates (around 60).

Dunno how old you are - It may be worth having someone younger or with better hearing test your current setup to ensure there still isn’t the presence of a coil whine outside your hearing range (varies from person to person). Even if you can’t hear the whine, it can still influence you over time. See this article.

If you recently purchased that video card, do a little research and see what others are experiencing online and if they have any success in returning it and getting one without coil whine.

Edit: Just to add, although I agree this game should prevent rendering past a certain framerate to mitigate the problem, if anyone is getting a coil whine it is quite frankly (and unfortunately) a hardware defect on your end. Always be wary of coil whine in future cards you buy if you get coil whine out of the box, and if it starts while under warranty get it replaced at the manufacturer’s expense.

The issue with Coil Whine is that it is a sign that you may soon have fan issues on your GPU depending on how often you push them. Many people order and install after market coolers for their GPU to address this as re-oiling a fan is a pain and only short term lasting as a fix.

If you continue to push your GPU, it could be anywhere from a couple days to several months before you GPU fan starts grinding, but at that time, you have to act quickly or risk burning up your card.

I never had issues with my graphic card. I have it for one year now and never had issues with any kind of games. This is first time i hear it and only with tree of savior. The FPS on the background was reaching more likely ~950. I am playing high end games and never happen before. Even low quality games and my card runing them at 400-600fps wich is useless of course but i never had that problem. Im using a BENQ screen with 144fps, most games i play on ultra settings are runing around 100-144fps. I take league of legend, with out vsync, game runs on 300-400fps and i have no problems.

I have to say, they game needs some tweeking, it is not normal to have a loading screen with high demand of graphic power.
