Tree of Savior Forum

Overall bad performance

The game generally performs quite bad.

My machine specs are:
Windows 7 professional 64bit
Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.20GHz
32GB RAM (1866MHz, CL9) DDR3
GeForce GTX 980
550 MB/S Sandisk SSD as Hard Drive for Games.

Usually i can play games on very high - max settings, for example an MMO shooter P*****side 2 with 90 vs 90 people matches in an open world, wich is a bullet hell with explosions, vehicles and stuff everywhere and still get at least over 40fps. I use a 144hz monitor and in regular matches in such games i can make use of this.

Now Tree of Saviour on the other hand doesn’t even give me 60 fps when i’m in a town with maybe 10-20 people.
In a full town (channel 1 Fedimian) it drops to about 20-25fps.
And field boss fights are even worse. In some cases 4-7 fps.

In boss fights in general i noticed that it especially creates a strong game lag when they shoot those red bullets.

I’m not sure if this may be caused by debug logs that run in the background for beta testing purposes but if not there really needs something to be done about it.

Or i really wonder what the minimum required PC specs for this game are supposed to be to enjoy it in all its glory. :wink:

It’s just the way the game is optimized. Someone said that it doesn’t utilize multiple cores

Thats weird, my pc close, but around 1 tier down on every spec and my game runs from 60 to 110 fps. Try disableing vertical sync?
Im also using high specs ingame so i have no idea what the problen could be.

Unless you are using a notebook, then the game by default starts with the other internal card. But im guessing is the Desktop GTX 980.

@ghostlyraven18
Yeah, i noticed the core thing already, too.

But that really means something needs to be done about it.

I know that performance optimisation is something that comes close to the very end in game development.
But now with a 3rd korean closed beta and a 2nd international one, isn’t it about time?

@arkraven
When running around on fields with not many people around and a bunch of monsters just minding my own business it runs okay, too.
But with characters and especially boss fights, and extra especially those red boss bullets it creates more and more lag.
I’m using a desktop PC and checked if the game uses my graphics card, and it does.
Vsync didn’t change a thing. Normally Vsync shouldn’t really impact performance much, if at all, anyways it should just cap your fps at your monitors refresh rate (usually 60Hz - so 60fps) by syncing both vertical screen halfs to deliver a ‘checked’ fullscreen image to the monitor instead of 2 half ones to prevent tearing (the lag line in the middle of the screen you can get with vsync off). if it’s off it can go over those 60fps, because it doesn’t wait some nanoseconds for anything and just delivers what it gets immediately, even if the monitor might just drop those frames.

Is this since todays patch? i was told todays patch made the game run worse, but im still surprised with your specs.

No it was since the beginning (of this closed beta), it even caused some somewhat glitched out graphics at boss fights that fixed themselves when there was less going on again.

Game has bad optimization problems, some closed beta games have them good. Some just have it really bad like ToS, but as usual we can expect it to be fixed before release. Then if there are any lingering problems we’ll get patches during release.

Really weird. I really have every thing 1 tier less, as in i5 4th gen, GTX ti 660, 8 GB ram, and 7200rpm HDD and i have absolutly no FPS issues. Granted, it should go at around 150fps instead of 80, but still never below 60. I have no answer tbh. Im also running 2 screens so unles you are running 3, no idea.

@LoliLicker
Yes, i was also trying the recent Star Wars Battlefront beta and it ran just fine with 100+ fps at maxed out settings.

@arkraven
I am indeed running 3 screens, but that never has been a problem.
I could imagine it also has something to do with ToS’ ‘fake’-fullscreen mode that everything else runs way better.

Whelp, just got home and it is running as you say, 25fps on the city. So the last patch indeed had an impact on performance as was stated by some people.

Depending where I am in the game, I get 100-200 fps. However, if I enter a very crowded room (Tenet Chapel, Demon Prison, etc), or if the boss starts shooting those bullets, then the fps drops down to about 10-30 fps.

I have very similar PC specs, i7-3770k @ 4.5GHz, GTX 980, 16GB RAM, win10 pro 64bit and runing from SSD and have basicaly same problem. Game runs close to 200fps in areas with few ppl but in first town in channel1 at statue i have like 20 fps and those bullet patterns sometimes drop my fps under 10 even if im alone at the bossfight. From what i tried game runs better in exclusive fullscreen mode but its only accesible via config file and its not possible to alt-tab from it. Also game stutters when you are running to crowded area and loading other players and im runing SSD, this should not happen in modern MMOs, I remember days in old MMOs like DAoC when you knew that enemy group is aproaching just from the stutters on inc but that was like directx 8 on ancient PCs. I really hope its debugs in background since a lot of MMOs got much better performance on launch than in betas.

Yah im not sure what the problem is but the game suffers from a fairly static framerate. I’ve played this with an Intel HD4000, ATI 260x and a GTX 980 and on all of them I get somewhere between 5 to 30 fps during fights/combat. Bigger fps variance when im alone and doing nothing which is what I expect from the vast difference in power between a 980 and integrated gpu.

The biggest thing was with the 260x. Standing alone with no mobs I get 160fps. I cast out of body (sadhu skill) and that alone reduced my fps from 160 to 85.

Then I tried switching all the graphical options off. Still 85. Stop using OOB, back to around 160. In other words the graphical options don’t provide any performance increase/decrease. I suspect the “show other players skills” option would if it worked, yet with that on or off I still see everyone’s effects.

Im sure they can clean this up over time though and they probably have more pressing issue’s than graphics performance at the moment.

I wonder if disableing Hyperthreading for the CPU in the bios would be beneficial to this game.
Though i see the problem that it’s probably quite bad for a lot of other stuff.

Has anyone tried this before?

They really need to go multithreadded though.
And there are a few places they could make use of this.

Well, objects on screen is still mostly in 3D, even though they designed to look like sprites. Means - you can’t expect it to run fast because of sprites like RO, that’s not sprites. And they use their old in-house granado espada engine. It isn’t crytek full of world class experts, so they write and optimize it themselves.
Personally I think - they did good job on engine. It runs okay on my linux box with mediocre specs and under wine emulation. Well, playable.

Did you ever encounter a field boss with a few people fighting him yet?

I’d like to see your opinion on this matter after that.

It’s because the HUD/UI it’s made by flash, remember the TE-RA fps issue because that? here we go again
Devs seriously should stop using flash to create HUD…

Nope. Klaipeda 1ch - 13fps on i3-2100 CPU @ 3.10GHz and Radeon HD 6750. Thats under linux wine, native windows environment should be twice faster than that.
Lots of people on screen usually means greatly reduced fps, I remember aion dredgion event where fps crawled to a
stop. It was literally fraction fps, lol
Devs battle this with drastically simplified player models and everything, like some option in settings, if fps became too low - automatically make all look like crap, but fast. I’d like to see something similar here, coz WOE might be unplayable.

Flash is launcher only. I don’t mind, though prefer that they won’t use it at all >_>
