well r8 progression is kinda terrible. In a regular game you feel your character getting stronger as you advance in the game. In TOS your character gets absolutely ■■■■on once you reach the “new” r8 maps. Depending on your build you might end up not being able to progress solo any longer. Not to mention your damage suddenly goes downhill due to “buffed” up monsters. The whole situation is kinda demotivating for a fresh player.
You have to sadly use all the best 220 gear and weapons until you reach 315. Buy/farm virtov or grynas and try to upgrade the best 220 weapon you can afford until you have enough money/patience to get the 315 one.
I started to play this game with 3 friends ago, 2 of them already quit once we reached the new maps. Its kinda retarded not able to solo or take up to 1min for a small pack of monsters.
IMC has to give us either some 280 white/blue gear or fix the monters. But jtos has that coming already.

If you want to solo everything, play single player games.
mmos tend to be single player friendly for a reason. If you just want to play for an hour a day, have fun looking 30 min for a group to even start BASIC questing. especially in a low pop game such tos.
Enforce grouping is one the best ways to make your playerbase uninstall the game.

Yeah it’s harder than keeping a donkey’s taint dry on a Futaleufu River raft in the rapids to upgrade armor past 200~ Marketplace on Orsha is practically empty of both armor and materials. Drop rates are all 0. Mobs have 11 quadrillion HP. Everyone’s poor or dead and can’t buy your stuff on the market. Finding a group via chat or queue takes 13.7 months of waiting. Feels bad.
I’m not going to be that idiot that jus types the parrot’d “gitgud”.
That being said if you are playing on a dead server I do suggest making more solo oriented builds. By that I mean a cleric, or a DEX based physical dps with capped evasion, and then make sure to compensate your HP/PDEF/MDEF accordingly.
When rank 8 was originally released I was able to solo every single quest and boss in existance with the exception of 2 fights, I had to group for the Zima Suecourt and Alembic Caves mega-bosses, I did all that on a scout 3, not an face rolling cleric so it is certainly doable.
Aim for either Virtov Plate Armor (or Grynas if you cant afford/have the time to farm virtov) then socket tier 6 yellow gems to the top and bottom, socket tier 6 blue gem to boots, and the hands are free to your prefrence. Nuale cards are great to boost MDEF allthough they are pricey, Max Petamion for the neck, or the Rhevisian Set also works if you are having trouble with all the darkness spammers in the rank 8 maps, pole of agony mages etc.
