Support wizards are exceptional, but I think it’s imperative that you also roll something which is capable of soloing either first or as an alt. This will help you get a feel for the game, and it’s important for new people to know how much easier the game is to understand after getting your first character to a high level. This will also help you farm silver to start with, though support wizards don’t really have a high/expensive gear requirement (like a DPS would) they will soon have a reagent requirement on most support wizard skills.
As for specific classes, chronos are helpful in just about every situation. Enchanters can vary, some lean heavily on support but you can also do a fair amount of damage yourself with the right build setup.
Linkers are also great. If you wanted to try to incorporate all 3, you could do wiz1 pyro1 linker2 chrono3 enchanter 2. This would be very support oriented but could work and I’m actually considering changing my chrono over to it once the wizard rework happens.
Another popular chrono-central build is cryo3 chrono3 sage2. Cryo is getting some big changes but this build won’t change too much overall, it’s about pulling things together for your group and supplying chrono buffs.
Some other enchanter-central builds involve picking up thaum3. Thaum buffs, if you stat correctly, are incredible. Swells can simulate transcended weapons for your DPS who may not be very well invested, making content a whole lot easier, including the new challenge modes and the raid. I’d say my favored build here is anything thaum3 sorc1 enchanter2. Sorc 1 may seem out of place here, but cat buff is best buff.
Lastly, there aren’t really too many linker-central builds, as linker3 is really more dependent on the stat distribution of your group. Lifeline is incredible and lets you do great things, but in a very niche or advanced way, such as snapshotting for buffs or summons. Having more joint penalty is always nice, and the new skill linker is getting for linker2+ seems great.
The absolute most important thing for coming up with builds in this game is: Have a goal. Know what you want to do, and synergize your build to optimize for your goal. As some people have said, this game is very alt-centric, but that’s not necessarily the case, it largely depends on how broad you make your goals and how your builds have accommodated. Overall, the plan should be making your class build greater than the sum of its constituent parts. Sometimes that means specialization, but often it just means knowledge about the mechanics being described and understanding how they work with each other. And that takes time, so don’t get discouraged.
