New player, love the game, but horrible community!

Despite all the negative reviews, I wanted to try the game out so I downloaded it last week. To my surprise, the game is a lot better than what I expected and I hope the game gains popularity again. What I get frustrated with isn’t the game… It’s the community. I went to Tenet church area, and I saw that finally I am playing with other players because before reaching that area, I was pretty much solo since there were no players around. I see that we are all killing the same mob for quest rewards, so I requested party. No response. Maybe this guy is a bot, I thought. The name sure sounds like a real human player, though. I tried requesting party to another player, same thing. I see that one player was already in another party, so I typed “party?” and no one responds back. I tried this for like 10 times, not being annoying but typing it in the chat whenever I see a new player. NO ONE RESPONDS!

I’m just wondering if this was one unlucky encounter by a new player like me or if this is what I should be expecting from this community. What are your experiences with trying to find a quick party or socializing in general in ToS?

You’ve actually gotten lucky compared what you might get from real players
But that was a bot :stuck_out_tongue:

C’mon, it’s not like that, pleople ingame tend to be nice, only these forums are populated mostly by those who for some reason or another, hate the game, or IMC, like myself.

Probably you found bots, that area usually has many and some of them “learned” to use common names instead of bot-sounding ones

Welcome to TOS

if you want to like the community even less or be corrupted by it, please stay on General Discussion xD

This is quite a common thing on this game as i’ve noticed, but let me guide you a bit as i’ve met several people ingame that has questioned me about the same topic.

“How do i talk to others!? They all look like they are in a hurry”

  • If you are on a low level map doing some quests and you see some other guy also questing, there is the chance that it may be some old players just power questing their new alts to reach certain dungeon milestone.

Old players are … well… old. They know what to do, what not to do and most just try to do stuff as efficiently and fast as possible, like when you see people insta dc’ing after a dungeon is complete so they can requeue or not waste boost exp timers. And even if they arent old players, as i’ve do questing and see obvious new players and try to strike some chatting, most of the time it also feels they just want to keep on their agenda. I guess its more of a new generation mindset where you go to a game to play and not to socialize.

  • Parties on this game for pve content that arent instanced are raaarely needed and can be tedious.

Quests can be shared, but you can’t be 100% sure that every player of a party will be on the same quest, which would cause some players to have to redo the other quests to help catch up the new member. This problem also appears when you start the game with a group of friends and decide to quest together, if a member of the group gets some extra free time ingame, it will find out not being able to progress until all the party members are with him. (To newbee groups i usually recommend them to create a “solo character” that they will focus on building while the party is not available)

Overall … you will usually progress faster alone, which is kinda sad.

  • What to do then …

Towns are places where you will usually find people on their free time, mostly afk … But how to approach them would depend a lot on you. I like to ask people about their build or certain class circles they may have i dont have that much knowledge about. Or even about the socializing on this game lol, but not in a complaining tone. Anything that invites to small talk is good, yet, remember that people also may have their agenda ingame, certain runs at XX hour or just standing here waiting for XX to return from afk, etc.

My last words would be: focus on yourself, but keep your posibilities open to strike some chatting. You are doing good by trying.

Also may i know what server are you playing on =O?

This is not a new generation thing. This is what mmorpg gaming culture as a whole has become. Remember most of ToS players are around their mid 20+ years old. And this isnt unique to ToS.

@bryanl87 your best bet is to find a social/RP guild. Since they are the most plausible group to small talk with.

I guess I can’t expect same crowd as GW2 haha. ToS is small populated game to begin with… and no mega server system. I play on Klaipeda

I know how that feels! Just a tip: if you are looking for people, check which channel you are on. Channel 1 for most number of people. Change that as well if you want less lag during game play.

I believe you can expect worse.

The will be times where players will basically sacrifice themselfs FOR YOU. yes! They will help you at many cost.

And there will be times where you (your character) will be the pillar that sustain the whole party, and someone still will call you “useless or idiot”.

About non-Meta. If you have an META build that is useful to some events, specialy Earth Tower, you will be very requisited.
But if not, dont expect anything from other players. If you dont fit their padrons of eficiency, you simple will be ignored.

Also, you just started this game. Tenet Crurch? This is just the 2% of the game.
And also, some people hate to grind. Like me. Always expect a NO as answer.

But I can garantee you, the community here on the forums is way worse

But I cant tell everybody on the game is bad, because some people already helped me a lot in quests and other things, just for fun, without know me. Its the luck of your day I guess.

@bryanl87 Not going to try and lie, I did not read the WoT, but looking at the responses and skimming through your post i can give you some insight on my experience.

Im one of those player that jumped the hype wagon and started playing ToS the hour it became available. Thankfully, i was able to play for a while before other people, as they experienced massive lag and D.C.

On topic:
I think the post by wolfy was pretty concise on the current state of the game, but it was not always like that. Upon early access release the game had grinding parties going all the time. Getting into groups in order to enjoy party play outside of dungeons, was very common at various stages of the game.

At the time many aspect of the game including, but not limited to: Maps, Quest NPC, and actual Quest content were missing. The game had quest up to level 220ish, and after that the only way to hit max level was to grind. Not only that, but the amount of EXP cards you obtain was very small compare to amounts of EXP needed in order to bypass leveling walls.

As it is my understanding after talking to many of my friends that kept playing even though i quit playing the game. IMC improved many of those aspects and boosted the EXP gained from dungeons to a point that grinding parties are non-existing, and are not required at all.

It is very sad that one of the reason that got me excited about this game, became obsolete as the game has evolve into a glorified single player game up to max level. At which point, many thing are still able to be done solo more efficiently than with a party, with the exception of high end WB(maybe) and Instanced content.

I hope this gives you and idea of how the community changed over the year and change that ToS has been out.

PS: Forgot to mention the monster were super over-tuned so there was many instances were doing it solo was just a waste of time.

theres no need to chat or form communities anymore, the game’s pacing and difficulty got reduced to the point even a toddler could play it. noone wants to party because noone needs to and it would only slow them down. while you are having fun exploring the areas and fighting new monsters, people who throw money at IMC simply rush to level 300 in a few hours. its a game about numbers now, not art or gameplay

There is no need, yet there are communities created. The limits created by guild chat, server location and timezone ingame are bypassed by joining Discord groups.

(I wont be sending invites to any discord, but just to show my own)

This is my list of tos discord servers, which i spend most of my time on. Even if socializing ingame is difficult there are still a lot of people whiling to form groups or communities.

From top to bottom

  1. ToS JP discord - Recently created discord by JToS players

  2. Ktest discord - To discuss Ktest patches, there was a public link posted around here when the combat changes patch started to be tested.

  3. Cheerio discord - Orsha guild discord, it has become really common for guilds to have discords, as there is a lot of utility on information sharing and organization possible on it. Also bots for timers, etc.

  4. Lighthouse Gaming Network - A discord community that has a ToS centered channel. Quite active. Not sure where to obtain the link … but i believe it was somewhere posted when googling “ToS Discord” on google as i got there like that before.

  5. ToS Art - Artists discord, but there are apprentice and viewer roles for those not so art talented. There is a thread and link posted by Elinhime around forums.

  6. ETWolves - My personal ET/Content discord, for any use i may give it.

  7. Nightswatch Discord - Orsha guild

  8. Noble Discord - Orsha guild

  9. Tree of Salt - NA TBL discord (Orsha + Klai) founded by me, but with strict behavior and invitation rules to avoid conflict. Invitation is done by people in already, if there is a single person opposing the invitation, it wont proceed.

  10. Renaissance Discord - Orsha guild

  11. Another ToS Art related discord

There is also ToSBase and other tos discords i left because my list was getting too big.

It could be weird to say … but there is a lot of people to talk to. From everywhere, as passionate AND hateful of ToS as us. Just gotta look a bit more =3=~
