it doesn’t have to be based on “which class is best” either
you don’t have to pick now either.
the higher in rank you go, the more you will be aimed at a particular set of skills… but many skills also transfer over between weapons easily.
it’s perfectly workable to choose your leveling path based on “what looks cool” or “i really want to (or don’t want to) use a certain weapon type”
i’m making a sword > pelt > hoplite > hoplite > corsair > fencer > fencer … coz coz spears are vicious (pelt / hop), pirates are cool, and fencers are pretty.
now i also arranged it so that many of the lower level skills i’m taking will still carry over and work with rapier, but i started from the opposite direction.
any build can be effective when skills are chosen to work with the separate classes involved, and played to what those skills’ strengths are.
it’s much more important instead to pick a build you feel like you will enjoy spending the time playing.
