Name Ordering, Unique Full Names, and running out of good names

No one’s made a thread about this yet? Surprising.

IIRC in the beta there were a lot of names, mostly of East Asian influence, that would’ve looked better if they were displayed:

[LASTNAME] [FIRSTNAME]

But there was no option to do this. I don’t imagine it would be terribly difficult to add a setting that allowed the two entries to swap places, as we already have an option to hide our “first” character names.

Also, in my search for “names” I found that a lot of people would like a system where their names could be one word yet unique or have unique last names. Perhaps we could make a system where people can claim more than one lodge name to use for character creation or something? Probably something people would have to pay for.

Finally, I don’t know because I made my account in one shot at day one/hour one of the beta, but did anyone who showed up in the later batch of 3,000 have a hard time getting names for themselves? I can’t help but feel the current system eventually forces late-to-the-party people to make unnatural lodge names. I’d like if possible everyone to have a proper name without numbers and such

I was one of the first 3000 so I can’t say much about the iCBT Family names being hard to get but from past experiences with this system (Granado Espada from IMCgames) it wasn’t actually that hard to get a nice family name and if yours was magically taken, then it was fairly easy to think up another name that wasn’t taken.

From what I’ve seen as well, most people don’t care about family names because it’s just like the unique names in other games but for your whole account and the First names are what people prefer to be unique and or the name of their character. Having both being unique is a plus for being the first to claim it though.

I also like your idea of switching Family name and First names because that would help a lot of RPers who want to have an Asian background. I’d like to expand on that however to hide the Family name instead of the First name just to get that extra customization and immersion in there.

I was thinking about a setting to hide Family name, but how do you then distinguish people with the same Character name, like what happens if a bunch of people (who have different family names ofc) with the character name “Kirito” show up in town?

That’s why I made the idea of buying more lodge names for your account -> it’s the only way I could think of for making more unique names. If we can figure out a solution to the problem above, then wow we can all basically have our own names since I could simply write a full name where my first names goes and hide my ‘family’ name.

By looking at the chat bubbles? Um… :frowning: right clicking and finding their info? IF ONLY I HAD A BETTER IDEA

I think the point of the family name is so that your friends can still identify you even if you are playing other characters. So having multiple family name kind of kills that purpose. Think of it like Steam ID or Battle.net ID, even if you are playing a different game(different character), your friends can still see you on their friend list.

But I do agree that MAYBE we should be able to switch our name order. I have some names that only works as [LASTNAME][FIRSTNAME]. But then it would be hard to tell what’s first and what’s last for everybody…

Also getting unique last names should be way easier than other games where each character has one unique name.

Perhaps your name is displayed with a different color when it’s swapped or something? Either way, I’m pretty sure even if swapped your chat ID will still be the same, so you can be identified.

The thing is right now the system only allows you to make characters with the same last name (your account name), but different first names. If I wanted to make a 2nd or 3rd character with a completely different last name, that wouldn’t work.

The only reason I would be against multiple Family names (didn’t put this in my previous post because I sped read through the OP) is because you’d be taking other possible Family names for new players which kinda sucks…

I mean if you really wanted to make someone with a different Family name, you could make another account but that kinda ruins the idea of having a family name. That instead makes it like other MMORPGs with unique names where eventually they would run out and everyone will be forced to use numbers or special characters in their names. (just making it an extreme for arguments sake)

I think it would potentially be confusing if you could swap the order of your names or have multiple family names. As someone has already said, these seem to be intended as a way you can uniquely identify a person while still having freedom to have a first name that is totally unrestricted. If you plan on having a name which would look best displayed backwards then make you family name the first name.

Overall,I think it’s a pretty cool system, you don’t need to introduce yourself on your alts all the time. I say just get creative with your name and be happy.

Its fine originality is just hard on some.

I understand the reasoning for this kind of system, but I don’t really like it. Having your family or last name be your account identifier puts you in a position where you have to choose if you want an account name that sounds like a last name or is more something you want to be identified with. I don’t want to be addressed by a last name, so I ended up making my account name what I wanted to be called, but that makes having a first name difficult, and all your other characters have to use that name too.

I’d rather have each character has their own unique identify so it feels like my character has an identity of their own, not they’re just all extensions of myself. I don’t really see much benefit to your identity always being known despite what character you’re logged in as. Sometimes you want to play anonymously, and you can always add peoples alts to friends lists if necessary.

I was one of the people to receive the later beta key and had no issue making a good family name or revising it to something else when I changed my mind. I changed my family name a few times actually, none were taken.

My issue is: Is there a way to display the first AND last name in chat?

I did run into the issue of seeing two people I believe with the same Japanese first name. The only way I distinguished them was by their avatar headshot looking different. It would be wonderful if first and last name were displayed together instead.

Correct me if this already exists in the options. If so, I think it should be default so a newcomer isn’t confused as I was at first.

I’m confused… There isn’t a way to show only the First Name of a character in game is there? It’s either Family Name only, Family Name + First Name, or None at all.

My thoughts exactly! It’s like I want my identifying name to be the one ‘locked’ to me, so I’m stuck with that alias being my last name if I want this. But at the same time I would prefer for it to be the first name that everyone sees so it’s the name I’m identified as.

Tough decisions when constructing a first and last name with this system! To lock an alias as your last name and never be called by your alias, or the other way around…

IDK. For the chat window, I only saw the first name…I mean, it could very well have been a last name with so many wanting to reserve their alias as their team name, which is another issue brought up in this thread. So last names looked like first names because of people’s choices. And if so, a lot of people had very similar surnames in beta, heh.

Still the same problem; would love for first and last name to be the default displayed in chat. This would come with the option to turn off the default in case you wish to hide on an alt and not have a family name display, etc. It just seems weird to me not to have the first and last name as the chat default.

I would make it so that if a player wants a unique name, there should be a checkbox during name creation that says “Hide numbers”.

It would make it so that any numbers you have at the end of your name aren’t visible. The only time you will need to know the numbers is for manual friend requests where you have to type in their name.

Sooo… like an identification number instead of a family name? That could work well like just numbering people by when their account was created instead of by name.

My only issue with this is that it’ll get confusing if you have multiple people with the same Family name and not showing their ID numbers talking at the same time .-. would get confusing for everyone.

You have a First name and a Family name, so it would just display both if the two were together on the same map. If both names are identical, it wouldn’t hurt to show the number as well. I personally would still hide the number. After all, people have identical names irl, and we get by just fine.
