Disclaimer: This is my opinion on the game from playing 48~ hours. Never playing before until a few days ago. I have done a little research to guide me.
So far I am loving the game. I am a vet RO player and vet of lots of other MMORPGs.
The cartoony graphics and RO / FF Tactics feel is what sucked me into this game upon reading about it months ago.
Gameplay Quality: Asides from the occasional lag, it’s very smooth easy to adjust too and pleasing all around.
Combat: Action-based combat makes for fun boss battles and very interesting duels: As a Cleric I was able to extend the duel long enough with a Swordsman to widdle him down until he chose to run away in obvious frustration. (As a full STR cleric that was my only option to win the bout lol)
The First Dungeon boss was surprisingly way more fun than I expected. After getting knocked around a few times I realized I could jump and dodge that AoE mechanic easily. The next dungeons I’m hoping bring more to the table but leave me wondering about the possibilities.
Controls: The hotkeys and different options for playing were amazing to see, I’ve always wanted to play RO with WASD, or a controller. I’ve ran into only 2 issues playing with the mouse / wasd setup.
- When I needed to collect tree sap from the boss my right click was still attack. I had to switch to keyboard so I could use spacebar to collect it.
- In group play right clicking to attack doesn’t work very well if a party member / pet is in your clicker.
Leveling: I’m Currently lvl 70 with my C2 Cleric Dievbrys. It’s going great questing is lvling me fairly fast, haven’t had to grind yet. I’m not the biggest fan of grinding. (Well let me rephrase that I don’t like grinding but if I had a quest that said kill 100 of these I’d be fine. I just want to be tricked into thinking killing countless numbers of frogs is for the lore.) I’m really hoping to see more quests released in the future so that we can quest and do some group content all the way to max. But that’s just a hope. The quests have been interesting and a nice mix of kill things pick up things turn on things protect things and find things.
Community: So far the community is great, I think separating the servers by location a little better would be extremely helpful. Not only for keeping the languages from crossing but to help ping across the board.
Grouping: Finding a group for questing is typically super easy and very helpful especially when you find that perfect grind-zone. Finding a group for the dungeon was extremely easy even as a dps (I’m a Dievrbrys go ahead and hate the tree hugger)
Chat: The biggest issue I’ve had with the game so far is how bulky and hard to navigate chat is. All doesn’t always show all for me. There’s no sound or anything when you get a PM, Global is just spam for gold sellers. I’d prefer a smooth clean like by line chat. As you would see in any other MMORPG.
Auction House / Market: Seeing the people with little shops set up to repair your armor or enhance it for a little just gives me nostalgia. The Auction House is easy to navigate but could use a little work in displaying items that are the same together and list them by prices in an order. I love looking for items there but when it comes to putting items up on the AH I can’t see how someone can stand only putting up 1 item then if it sells waiting 2 days for the money. I think this needs to be changed to limitless or increase the limit then token players have limitless.
Trading: I understand the trading limits but with potential already being part of the items I personally think trading should just be open for all and find another way to increase entitlements to token players.
Classes: The amount of classes is crazy anr amazing at the same time. Looking at builds and just imagining what you/others can create is inspiring to play the game the way you want because there’s almost no way you and another person will have the same exact build. I always have nightmares that I’ll mess up and have to reroll because of a stat point miss-hap, but no matter the miss-hap that point is going to some use wherever it goes. I’ve heard talk of stat reset pots going to the shop that would be interesting.
Attributes: Just when I thought there was enough character customization this hits. You’re telling me I can tweak my class to my play style even further then choosing from countless other classes? Damn. I could see this as a money and time consuming part but if we know anything that’s always good for the health of a game.
PvP: I haven’t gotten there yet but I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be very interesting. Seems promising. And cannot wait to KAMEHAMEHA some folks.
Cash Shop: The cash shop doesn’t seem too crazy with only a few things there that are important but not enough to make them a must for every player. Theres lots of things that could be added for future profit making opportunities.
Summary: Tree of Savior is a great game IMO. It’s having some rough patches though all games do when they start off. I think some of the limiting features could be lightened up or even just for token players. Limiting game play isn’t good for any game. As a gamer sometimes I just wanna sit down for 36 hours and get some ■■■■ done and drop a could hundred on exp pots and hair styles. We need less restrictions and more localized servers for players around the globe. Token needs to be something you want to be because it makes the game more enjoyable not just playable.
TL:DR
Great game with some great systems, Could use some work on Restrictive Gameplay aspects: Trading/Auction House Limits, Dungeons ( should be spammable or at least each dungeon have a separate lock out.) Make Token non-restrictive. So it’s 100% worth it.
