Mobs "tethered" to spawn points or "free-range" mobs?

Personally, I came from an age where MMOs (where players still did a bit of roleplaying in them) had mobs that weren’t tied to spots. They were allowed to roam free around the map, and you were allowed to fight them anywhere you wanted.

I really hope they aren’t “tethered” to circles in this game. Having them be free-range and move around organically makes the game less boring and predictable. It breaks immersion when they are “tethered”, and is a real turn-off for me. I feel like whenever I play a game with tethered mobs, I’m playing the same game I’ve played before, just with a different paint-job.

The mobs won’t move much unless provoked, however the spawn rates vary and adjust themselves to which area is being under a grind at the moment.

The problem is that free-range mobs always end up being trained for easy AOE farming. Doesn’t it also break immersion for enemies to spend all day chasing people across the map to be slaughtered en masse, time and time again?

Until somebody figures out an efficient smart AI algorithm, tethering is kind of a necessary evil.

I personally think they should do without the tethering but make it easy to lose aggro from running to stop this from happening. Tethered enemies make the game really annoying for ranged characters because if you go outside the range, they’ll just wander back with “invincibility” and then come back to bite you in the ass when you’re not looking.
