Martial forms / styles - topic

As a eternal apprentice and fighter.
I practiced Mantis Kung fu for 4 years.
Kendo for 2 years(and counting)
Okinawa Karate for 1 year (and counting)

I wish to share some forms and experiences here:

My first graduation on kung fu i was so afraid that when i did the horse stance, my legs were shaking so hard, that one of the masters present there offered me water and some advice, i was embarrassed, but he was a true master and calmed me down so o i could proceed to the next trial.

What experiences do you have to share ?

I’m a Kiai Master wanna challenge me?

kidding aside :v:

I’m an Impact Disciple, the only defence against it is to not fight it.

My martial arts experience consists of:

  • 2 years Taekwondo
  • 6 weeks Jeet Kune Do
  • 2 years Mizong Luohan Gongfu

Quit Taekwondo because it just wasn’t working for me (more strength-reliant whereas I’m more of an agility build). Jeet Kune Do was offered at my local community college so I decided to try it for summer school (hence 6 weeks). Wasn’t so bad, but good grief the training was intense. x_x I already had a 4-pack coming in by the end of summer school. No wonder Bruce Lee was buff as heck.

I was ecstatic when I found out my university offered gongfu so I signed up as soon as I could. Learned ox-tail saber and staff while training in Mizong, but had to stop because I had to graduate and go home. :< If I was able to stay, spear would’ve been my next weapon. I’d really like to get back into gongfu again and learn dual sabers and the guandao. I prefer buying battle-ready weapons since they have a better weight to them (and if I’m going to be learning weapons, I might as well train with the real deal).

I really like the Kwan Dao, but i couldn’t learn it yet because it was on a higher graduation.
My preffered weapons are :
Shuang gou
Sanjiegun
Dao
Bo
Liang Jie Gun
But i’m learning them, they are very hard to master on my left hand. I’m better with the nunchaku(liang jie gun) and the staff(bo).

I remember my first 6 months on tyhe nunchaku, i had so many hematomes, my elbow felt like i broke them. but it was all worth.

I’m trying to use my left hand more so I can be ambidextrous. Still can’t write very well with it, but I can use it a lot better than most people.

I myself learned a mixed variation of Chinese shadowboxing and Kung Fu as well as Muay Thai when I was a kid from my dad for about 8 years. As I grew older, I stuck into Western Boxing and have held there for the past 4. A lot of valuable fundamentals and strength as well as rhythm I’ve learned from it.

I did a little of muay thai for 6 months but the master teached us mostly kick boxing, and i was way weaker than what i’m now, so i quitted, couldn’t handle the beating 2x a week with big monsters.
I was 170cm 59kg vs 185cm+ with 75kg+ and thats very though to endure.

Sup.

Seems like theres a quite a few martial artists here

My list:

7 years karate wadoryu
1½ years brazilian jiu jitsu
1½ years mixed martial arts
1 or so years of kickboxing / muay thai

Haven’t trained at all for the past 3 years now, but im soon ready to implement my plan to get back into shape. Then I’m thinking of Niten Ichi Ryu Kenjutsu, if im accepted to the dojo that is.

What a CV you got there mate !
I’m the world greatest fan of Musashi ! So i’m really happy when someone say about kenjutsu.
Where i live there is only 2 dojos of kendo, one is 300km distance from here, and another is 2h with bus…so not easy to get there.

Thanks man

The dicipline im talking about is the original writings of musashi after he retired, which he passed on to 3 of his students before his death.

There isn’t that many schools that have the license to teach niten ichi ryu kenjutsu, but im lucky enough to have 1 of those teachers in my city. However, it’s not a sure thing to get into the school. They handpick their students - there are no application forms or beginners courses. You contact the master and ask if you may come and watch them train and it is up to him to decide whether you get in or not.

And since im in such a crappy shape atm, I really need to train myself before I attempt to get it. I’m also not feeling too confident atm on my close combat skills, really need to remind myself also about what its like to get into the ring. It’s funny how quickly your instincts disappear after being a break

i got this book, but unfortunately there is no master/sensei/teacher of his style in my state/city , so kendo is the only way to learn the way of the sword…

well, at least you get to use armour and yell a lot

Uh, this is spam ?

10 years Karate Shorin Ryu- Matsubayashi
4-5 years Kobudo (same style/school)

Looking for start practicing Kenjutsu in a Niten Ichi Ryu Dojo next year.

I remember start practicing Kobudo with Bo and was a bit frustrating becouse after almost 5 years of practicing Karate and being advanced, It was like starting againg with the basics movements to trasmit the same strength and speed to a piece of wood and make it part of my body as if were my own fist. Hard at beginning but also remember me that there is always something new we can learn and never forget the basics, becouse it s the basis of what the rest with held.
