Many lines of bad words: are they necessary?

15th sept: New on ToS Patch: Bad words.

I went to check it what it was about and I was surprised to see it is about, probably, censorship on words. And only a few of those thousand are for english words. There are a ton of korean stuff in there, tho(wonder if they have that many).

There are more in the files, I probably didn’t copy it all.

Censhorship in ToS works as ***** (asterisks), and having to retype some stuff can be really annoying sometimes, specially when words like “damn” are censored. And some simply are completely unecessary like gay and lesbian lol. Also, not sure if this file will be the one up on the international, this could be just for korean.

There probably is an option to turn word filter off but I don’t remember of it.

What do you guys think?

Word filters are a terrible idea, always have been, as not only do they stop normal conversation(Such as trying to say you’re going a Fletcher class because Fletch is blocked) but they don’t actually stop anyone from just changing letters around or adding a space or using an L instead of an I etc etc.
If the word filter is a must for some reason or another then put an option in to toggle it off.

There is nothing more to add to this. That’s all there is to say about this topic, since forever. And there are people out there who still don’t get this.

As mattex said above, it should be possible to turn on/off the filter like in other games, to let people decide how talk and what to read.
No words for the gay/lesbian thing…are them really bad words for you?

O_o Gay, Lesbian, Damn, & Swap are all not bad words. How strange.
(Neither is Slave really but people could use it in touchy contexts maybe.)

“Swap” especially, am I missing something? haha

I’d greatly prefer the option to turn it off – I remember in icbt1 there were certain words that were practically written out in the game that I couldn’t say in chat because the system targeted it as censored. Getting censored happened to me a lot in icbt & I never once tried to ever say anything offensive… :confused:

It was pretty annoying.

HAha that’s amazing ! If you go through the list you can see “Jazy” and “Jazi” and of course “Prno” XD

Yeah, the lines and lines of bad word censoring can get kind of silly. I remember the Starcraft 2 beta censor system. It banned the usual stuff, but it also blocked “trans” and “black.” The worst part about this is there was a spell in the game called “Transfuse” and a color palette for you units which made them all black. : /
Also, “Swap” is blocked? Isn’t that a spell a mage class has?

Many of these words aren’t even curse, and its tottaly fine to use them in some contexts

Type out a long sentence explaining something, then hit Enter. Out comes “**”, and I’m thinking, damn, what the hell was it this time? (xD)

Happens on a daily basis.

“ass” is especially dumb, since this is a game about tons of clASSes and therefore class discussion is very prevalent in chat.

There is no point in having a filter for bad words, seriously. It can always be avoided by anyone at least as intelligent as a 10 year old, and all it does is unnecessarily slow communication and make it frustrating in crucial moments.

I’d add that words themselves are neither inherently good or bad, it’s all about context and chosen meaning, but that’s a whole other general discussion…

I don’t see the need to censor words specially if it got the ‘Teen’ rating.

Heck there is tons of cut scene depicting a person violently dying plus the time they make downloading steam, installing the game, registering for the beta, or finding the game in general probably made them shift thru some porn pop ups at some point haha.
