Is TANK class really needed on this game?

I didn’t have a chance to play the iCBT. So I need the opinions from players who had the chance to play  TIA!

Wellp… I was going to make a snide remark by asking you if you died at all in the CBT but since you didn’t play, then I would say that yes, Tanks are an amazing class to have but as far as I know, there is no “Full” tank with only aggro skills. There are either DPS Tanks which get aggro skills but still do a ton of damage and CC, or there are Support Tanks which get support skills along with aggro (they can still do a lot of damage with few skills).

So IMO, very useful to have for party grinding. I’m not sure about bossing however because I soloed every boss so far besides Party Events where a boss was summoned for your party… but we killed it in a few seconds with a lot of burst damage.

Tanks with an AoE taunt skill are definitely useful for grinding. I partied with one and I could really tell the difference between having a tank and not having a tank. With a tank, your party can enter a room, hit taunt, and blow everything up in one go. Without a tank, that’s a lot of kiting and positioning to make sure that the mob are lined up nicely.

Peltast is much more useful for grinding than I had anticipated.
In combination with AoE spell users, they are excellent farmers.

During some Boss fights a Cleric seems to be a must.
With the Safety Zone the person who has aggro can tank forever and ever.
And if people ever get damaged, he just heals them back up.

What you might want to know is that boss fights vary in difficulty a lot.
Solo bosses are generally defeated quickly. Other bosses you need to team up for, otherwise you don’t stand much of a chance without wasting time, pots or icoins.
Most bosses attack patterns are also easy to predict and at some bosses you sometimes don’t even know what hit you, which get’s frustrating very quickly. Certain mechanics in boss fights also seem just plain and unoriginal.
For example, some bosses knock you down and draw away half your HP. And if you are on the ground, you can’t stand up fast enough to dodge the following attack, which again drains half of your HP. So you are dead.
Another example is bosses getting their attacks highlighted into certain directions and then you get hit by that same attack despite having clearly stood out of range. Sometimes bosses like that blue Bird don’t even show any effects or animation when they attack. I had that bird attack me several times and it did like 1-20 damage and at some points it one-hitted me. Which just feels wrong.
Yet another example are bosses with huge HP bars but no offense. You just keep your attack button pressed down and punch away or you jump-attack left, right, left, right for minutes on end without any challenge to it.
A worm boss at the lvl70 area even spawns poison directly beneath your feet, so you get poisoned either way no matter where you stand or what you do.

To me, most bosses felt like a poor excuse for people to either waste their icoins on or force priests into a party as a must-have.
A few boss fights felt great tho. Tanks were never really a must in a boss fight, but a healer for sure.

I agree. I am having this debate internally as well (full on PVE tank or full on dps melee/barb). I didnt get to play beta. I have heard mannnyyyy ppl say this game is soloable. I’m wondering if at levels 100-250 can you solo it all? can you solo this game at a decent rate that is comparable to grouping as we have seen in many MMOs since 2008+? or is grouping a necessity after a certain level?

if grouping is a necessity (and yes in certain MMOs you couldnt hit the level cap in less than a year if you soloe’d, but not nowadays), if its a necessity then I guess a tank is needed or is it? can i just be a barb, and team up with 2 other barbs and we mow down everything no tank required?

i’m also torn between going iWin Barbarian (from what I’ve heard), or a full on PVE tank. I’ve made this mistake a couple of times in recent games (GW2 & FFXIV) and it has wasted my time by picking a less useful class).

Sometimes I wonder if I can’t see the forest from the trees. Are the below points true? (not sure as I didnt get to play any betas yet)

A. barbs are OP
B. tanks aren’t super needed/required at any level (still useful, but not needed)
C. this game can be soloed reasonably as fast as grouping?
