If you mean regular gems, you can get them as rewards for party quests.
If you mean monster gems, those are a bit harder to come by, and if you do get them and they are compatible with your class, hoard them until you get the best gear possible.

What? I just shove monster gems into my regular gems. Just finished up a level 6 blue gem now in my vubbe gloves.
Different folks, different strokes I guess. That’s one way to free upgrade gems…

Ah well, they were +1 deprotection zone gems. I don’t think clerics even care.
