So heres the thing…
I’ve noticed a lot of people complaining about lag however I don’t get anywhere near as much lag as what is complained about. At least nothing that interferes too much with game play but I’ve observed others around me rubberbanding or complain about lag especially when I experience none. This post isn’t intended to be a miracle post to fix all lag but ideas on what can be done to improve issues with lag that others may have missed. This post is made in assumption that most know a little bit about computers.
1.) Do I meet the minimum or recommend requirements?
If you meet only the minimum or below the recommended settings try turning the graphic settings down one by one to see if it improves lag.
Make sure settings like Vsync off as this is a setting that is well known setting that cause lag in video games.
2.) Are there others hogging up the bandwidth?
Make sure to play the game either when they are done or turn on Quality of Service (QoS) settings if your router has it. I’m not sure on how to set this as I never needed to set this so please refer to google if you don’t know how.
3.) Am I playing at peak hours?
If you can manage it don’t play at the same hours that everyone else does. Usually these are at times when people get out of school or work. Currently peak hours appears to be around 11 am or 12 noon server time although I’m sure this may change as time goes on.
4.) Do I have other programs running in the background?
Turn off any unnecessary programs or use a game boosting programs. I don’t currently know what programs are popular for game boosting at the moment but I have used them in the past.
[Do these at your own risk. Know what you are doing before attempting.]
5.) Might I have viruses or malware?
Always a good idea to check especially if you share the computer with others.
6.) When was the last time I cleaned my computer/ is my hard drive half full?
Clean the computer. Get rid of any programs you don’t use anymore delete any documents or other files you don’t need anymore. Defrag if necessary.
7.) Did I update my drivers?
I have an issue of forgetting to update my graphics driver a lot and I’m sure I’m not the only one. There was a recent update with nividia’s graphic drivers that I almost missed the day before the game went up.
8.) Am I in a heavy populated channel?
Usually the first few channels have more players on them. If possible switch to a channel that has less players.
9.) Am I far away from the server, have high ping, or latency issues?
There are programs that claim to improve ping. None that I have used actually improved my issues on other games but I know others who swear by them. I’m not sure what the current popular ones are.
[Download programs at your own risk.]
There is also Leatrix Latency Fix which is a download that works for all games but if you are not comfortable with downloading a program look for the TCPAckFrequency / TCPNoDelay fix. Its something that I have used for latency on Ragnarok and I swear by this one.
I’m sure I missed some and will add them along the way especially if anyone brings them to my attention but I hope this post will help others. Also I’m sorry if this is hard to read.
