im sure he could research everything himself if he wanted to, after all he has exp.
with that said, going in blind and if u arent smart about it, might give u a really really bad lvling experience. that is why i highly recommend researching. the satisfaction of making a build that works that you created is as good as exploring i think.
if u go in with “ignorance is bliss” you could get fked over.
personally for icbt2 i went in with not much information, luckily i played an easy lvling class, but i did makes some mistakes with my build here and there. there were free skill resets and stat resets (and i used alot) that saved my build. however there are reset item restrictions on obt which make it harder to reset your build. thats why planning out your build is probably the smarter choice here.
now there are some of those who actually posts build for help either because they are troubled, unlike those who are just lazy. i give suggestions, with reasons, but i dont expect them to follow it. also, if they know that their build not efficient, but they still want to play it, i wont stop them lol
It’s more fun to go blind. Since you dont have the worries of what would happen if you screwed up a build or the worst possible build. But it is recommended to at least look up classes so that you can get an idea of what class you want to focus on as this is the main structure of the game
You can focus on stat distribution or whatevers later on or once you understood how the game properly works and create a new characther.
Also, if you go blind, you are prone of getting killed as a heretic by Goddess Giltine.
I have the same thought i just theoralize my build and just figure out how i want to play it, since ive never played the cbt i might remake couple of my characters… and that doesnt bother me i dont need no competition to play the game. My advice is that you dont need to rush anything there might be more newbies than you think so just enjoy it.
my suggestion is,
it’s ok if you didn’t want to learn about the game as much,
but at least, you should learn about the classes, at least, and seeing what kind of class you like,
time have changed, in RO, many people played the game not knowing a single thing and screwed up a lot during their progression, yes that was fun, but i dont think you should approach newer MMO in the same manner.
Yeah, you can simply make a new character if you screw up, it’s pretty easy to raise a character to quite high level, and any build is viable later on, because new classes are usually outscaling old classes hard enough, so old classes are not that detrimental to your build. If you are enjoying the character now, then you will most probably enjoy it even more in future. And if you are not enjoying it, feel free to create a new one.
Just remember that some characters that may feel weak early on will be more useful later.
A few tips about skills and mechanics (I hope it won’t spoil your “explore yourself” experience, just to clarify some facts that can be missed otherwise):
-If skill deals low damage it doesn’t mean skill is bad. Because as you raise your level and get better equipment, skill damage will become much less significant (as it adds to your attack damage). So it’s often better to have more level 1 skills then 1 level 5 skill.
-Pay attention to skills attributes, some of them have very powerful effects but may require at least 2 or 3 skill levels (you can see it in attribute description).
Attributes can be upgraded regardless of your level(once you get access to them) and don’t need any skillpoints, only money/time to upgrade. So upgrading them as early as possible will help a lot. Just pay attention to the price.
-If you are unsure how skill works, you can always read the details at tosbase/ask on forums. But beware that there are quite a lot of misleading opinions over there, so the best way to decide if anything worth investments is to try it in game. You may find a diamond in something that others considered dirt. Especially it’s true if you don’t mind raising a new character based on your own mistakes and discoveries.
-Some skills are multihits, and it’s not always mentioned in the description. So if you are comparing comparing 2 skills and the first does 5 times more damage, it doesn’t mean it’s better. Because multihits not only apply skill damage on every hit, but also apply your physical attack on every hit. The only downside is that they might be weaker against enemies with high armor. But currently armor is a very bad stat and hard to stack up, so you will never fail of you get multihit skill.
Another type is 0 cd skills. They are somewhat similar to multihits, but they will eat your SP with every use.
Also there is a mechanic of overheat. It will grant you several uses of the skill before it goes on CD (Though you have to use all stacks in order for CD to start). Skills that have overheat are marked with letter O in the corner at ToSbase.
And don’t underestimate skills applying status effects on your enemies, some of them are very powerful.
-Buff limit. There is a mechanic that will erase your oldest buff if you/your party member cast a new one on you over the buff limit. This way you may lose important buff overwritten with useless one. So learn to cancel unnecesary buffs with right click (it only affects first row of buffs, 2nd row is limitless). However, you will have some problems with this only at higher levels. Also there is a buff that increases buff limit.
-Finally, stats. There are 5 stats in this game, STR, CON, INT, SPR and DEX for Strength, Constitution, Intelligence, Spirit and Dexterity. You can find details on them elsewhere. I will just point on stat synergy and basics:
Firstly, physical damage classes (Swordsman and Archer) never need INT. It affects only few of their abilities and effects are miserable. The same applies to STR for mages and clerics(with some exceptions). Though it empowers their autoattacks, their DPS comes mainly from skills which are unaffected with by STR. The same goes to DEX, but DEX grants some evasion so it’s not totally useless(but much less effective then INT/SPR).
Secondly, you will get bonus stat points if you invest more points in single stat. Basically, if you have higher Dexterity, every next point in DEX will worth more (bonus points are given with every X’s stat point invested where X decreases as more points are invested). So there is a point in maxing 1 stat.
But you shouldn’t forget that DEX and STR empower each other. The more STR you get the more valuable crit chance from DEX becomes. Also almost every character needs at least some CON investments to avoid being one-shotted by higher level monsters. While SPR is needed if you want to spam skills(yet in most cases potions will solve this problem). It also scales very good with some cleric skills.
I think those tips are enough to never fail your build. You will always have enough power to fight monsters if you follow them. Try out new things and explore without concern, this game is quite friendly to the player.
If someone wants to use some of this tips somewhere, feel free to do this. I’m just too lazy to create a special forum thread with newbie tips.
Some great tips in here, thank you for all your contributions (well written mini-guide, Derael) A basic understanding of the stats and skills won’t ruin my experience, even back then I was aware of the different classes and what I wanted to be.
I don’t think I can look at an MMO the same way as I did back when I first started, so this could be an utterly futile attempt. Worth a try though.
As for play style, I really don’t know. I’ve experienced all of the archetypes. Swordsman / Monk suits me as that’s how I want to project myself in the game, but Hunter / Mage is just usually more fun and keeps me on my toes more. I remember being a horrible Healer in other games, lol it’s just too boring for me.
Healers here are much more fun, because they just need to throw a bunch of healing tiles/occasionally cast healing spell. And ability to heal is not even restraining them from dealing good damage. Since it’s basic ability of Cleric tree, even pure damage monks can heal well enough.
The game can be punishing if you don’t know your build. Well unless you’re totally fine with it and won’t be doing any PvP, you can enjoy the game as it is but I wouldn’t recommend as the mobs would do a crapton of damage later on.
The game guides (dungeon, exp cards, farming locations etc.) can be checked at General Gameplay/Class and Rank, several ToS fansites, or my personal favourite, Reddit.
If you have any questions or hesitate on what or how to start, you can PM this great guy @FatePGN. Dude helped me alot in my questions and build.
i think TOS going to be overload by healers…

If kToS is any indicator they’re still light on them. Linker was the 2nd most played… And there were just piles of swordsmen.
@arandomamerican I agree with the good ol’ days of no guides. I miss that… Though in the case of him being someone with kids or a life and limited time. If he’s not a theorycrafter and he’s one of those people that focus on the end results instead of the roads… He’s going to get top level and quit. And we don’t want that cause we want him paying bills and enjoying the game. I’m just tossing the warning out there. If he’s that type. If he’s a theorycrafter… Well here are the only two things they need: https://github.com/vyne1/tos-mechanics http://www.tosbase.com/tools/skill-simulator/ and more power to them. Cause I hate to use the word… But the meta isn’t very well developed anyway. Plenty of good compositions to build.
I laughed always so much. When peopl called archers Underpowered and just for style class back in icbt 2 XD…
The meta is still fresh and as guickly changing then the tides.
Atm i even doubt that swordy dps will fall off that much… yes compared to an archer that’s buffed atm, they’re “weak”. But heck xD … i just noticed that even going high>pel>doppel nets in shock duration and armor break to an aggro puller …
“You’re so weak”
-magic hit’s for less
-archers and any patk hits stronger
-squishys not dieing
“I am~”
I can still hear people say cartar stroke is useless … the same as punji stake is useless … claymore is useless … or that Barrier is useless … pff.
Excuse me while i die of laughter xD.
People usually say it’s not worth levelling past lvl 3, because knockback damage attribute is avialble at level 3 and it deals most of the damage. Punji needs only level 1 as well. Claymore is just a skill with good damage and high CD/setting difficulties not bad not great as I see it.
Yet for sure people tend to underestimate some things.
^^
One thing about cartar stroke is. That level 3 is enough. But they say " i never use it past 100…" or stuf flike that xD.
Which is just hillarious.
Maybe they never use bash as well. Or maybe they just hunt monsters one by one, so Cartar is not needed)
That would be sad…
No wonder people complained about leveling speed xD…
