How does the game play with controllers?

So, just to step away from the rage on the forums and all, I was wondering how this game plays with controllers to those specifically using an xbox 360 controller? I am curious to give it a shot as they are currently on sale near my location.

Looking for PROS/CONS vs mouse and keyboard setup when playing both ranger and melee.

If anybody could chime it, it’d be appreciated, thanks!

you would need a mouse and keyboard still to interact with options ui and chat…other than that controller for this game is like controller in ff14 LT/RT and LB/RB for skills and items…i like this style…

I am faster with a keyboard, but more comfortable with the controller by far. If I am doing some grinding or casual questing, controller it is. For anything intense (pvp, hard bosses) I’ll use the keyboard. You will see more of a difference with the archer than the swordsman

For me the controller works fine and smooth in this game. The only thing I don’t like about it is that you still need your keyboard and mouse for things like the market and merchants, your inventory or setting stat/skill points. But talking to npc, doing your quests and using the world map for teleporting works fine with the controller. I think it’s easier to aim the aoe (blue circle) skills with the mouse.

Plays better with a controller IMO (and im a 100% PC gamer).

It would be ‘faster’ to use a keyboard if you had a good connection to the server, but with the 200ms+ i get from Australia the extra button input for spells doesnt make much difference.

You can ‘unlock’ the mouse to press UI stuff, I still use the keyboard / mouse for shop/market and some other things.

Controller is easier on the fingers. You can play laying down easily. Overall more enjoyable to me but as others pointed out there are somethings you still need keyboard or mouse for. You’d need a keyboard for chat anyways though.

I was playing on xbox 360 controller, and for some reason the button IDs suddenly changed and I could not configure anymore LT and RT buttons to work in the game. Not sure if the game changed the IDs or my driver update.

Since then I’m using keyboard (customized most keys), and I think both controller and keyboard are equally nice options.

Im using a ps3 controller and its great but the targeting for ranged classes can be a bit frustrating as it will sometimes target things across the map instead of whats right next to you.

I’m a controller user myself, I think they need to update the UI though.

Controller works fine and smooth in this game, much moreso then other MMO’s. I also find the keybinding much more attractive then any other MMO I’ve seen, even moreso then FF14 which I previously thought had the best controller keybinding for skills until now.

Some confusion I have is for how to use V on the controller, I tend to just reach for the keyboard.

You use your mouse for UI, but that’s fine mostly. You shouldn’t really be doing that sort of stuff mid combat so it’s caused me no problems.

If you’re more comfortable with a controller then a keyboard like I am (even as a hardcore gamer for both PC and Console I can’t ever get used to keyboard key layouts and always get my fingers lost), I highly recommend it.

Experience: Ps4 controller

I’ve played with the keyboard and mouse controls since beta. I’ve started to pick up the controller within this EA. I’d say I’m quite surprised the game plays well and smooth with it. The default keybinds on controller are quite sweet that I don’t think I’d have to customize it yet. Although I still have to use the keyboard for some interaction and for the UI.

Overall it has given less stress on my hands and fingers with a controller which I find enjoyable vs a keyboard and mouse.
I’m using a Logitech F710.

Do you mean the v you need for some quests? For the ps3/2 controller it works with pressing L2 and start together.

Thank you, I never really tested since experimenting when that button popup occurs and everyone is killing everything was rough, now my experience is that much smoother.
