The description says that it increases the damage of the cloned skill by 50%, which doesn’t seem complete. Are the hits dealt by the clones fake or real multihits?
Increases damage you take by 50%. Each Clone deals same amount of damage as you, without any buffs or attributes.
They’re multi-hits.
Since you’re new to the skill, let me also note to you that clones will only copy a specific set of skills. If you look around, you might find the complete list somewhere, but off the top of my head, I can tell you a few skills that work: Kunai, Umbo Blow, Rim Blow, Moulinet, Synchro Thrust, Shooting Star, Double Slash and Shield Bash.

Also, are the clone hits always converted into Piercing damage regardless of the original skill’s damage type? i.e. will things like Cleave/Zwerchhau affect say, cloned Double Slash damage?
Buffs on the clones won’t work, however, debuffs on the enemy will work.
Their damage type mimics the original skill. So yes, you can use Cleave/Zwercchau to deal more damage, but be aware that clones won’t copy these skills.
Shinobi is a good rank 9 class choice for Doppel 3 characters. You can use it with Double Slash or Moulinet depending if you’re Sword 3 or Highlander 3. Kunai with clones deals a nice burst too.
