[Guide] Tweakening your PC/Laptop for the merge "optimization" (Nvidia cards)

A few changes will be made, make sure to backup whatever file you gonna change (in this case it will be only user.xml).
The simple changes here may or may not work for everyone, may cause more harm than fix, so use at you own risk, not that is hard to undo what was done.

Now to the tweaks:

  1. Open your user.xml in the game folder (Steam\steamapps\common\TreeOfSavior\release) and change the BitPerPixel=“32” to BitPerPixel=“16”. MAKE A BACKUP OF THE FILE FIRST
  2. Now go in your NVCP and in the Manage 3D Settings and click in the Restore button, after that click in apply, now go on the Program Settings tab, find Tree of Savior (client_tos.exe) then look for the following settings:
Texture Filtering - Ansotropic Sample Optimization change this setting to On.
Texture Filtering - Quality change this to High Performance.
  3. In Steam Library right click in the Tree of Savior then go on Properties, in the General Tab you click in Set Launch Options type -DX11 (only use this if your card support DX11 if it only support DX10 you can change to -DX10 or leave it blank).

Those are the only settings i made to improve my game to the way it was before the merge.

Just a small warning here, in case you had, as me, changed your user.xml to some extend, i suggest you to reset it to its default, to do so, simple delete the file and run the game again, after that you can change the setting i pointed up there and turn off in-game whatever you want in the settings.

August 24th 2016:
A small update on this, after installing Geforce Game Ready Driver Ver. 368.81 and Geforce Experience and ran Optimization on Tree of Savior (yes, the game have a profile in there), i ran it more smoothly, over 60fps in field, around 30 in empty cities and high activity in dungeons/missions and 15-25 in crowded areas, can’t say it will work for everyone but worth a try if anyone still have issues with performance.

Post fixes and updates:
Updated the 3rd setting i missed about the Launch Options in Steam.

Can you post before and after screenshots for this?

Also, how much FPS increase did you get? Say standing near warp statue of Fedimian city ch1 for example.

I can, but it can affect systems differently, not graphical quality, but performance itself.

The only thing i saw with considerable change is the water, when you change from Auto Setting to Low Profile in the game settings, it turn on and off the water reflection.

As for others:

  • FXAA is poorly implemented, it only cause a small blur in the texture to try hid the serrated lines, but even so you can still see it.
  • Background Effect apply as said, but it is a small one, you can see it well in Orsha, the sakura petals dropping is controlled by that setting.
  • Monster Pieces as it imply cause a huge load in the system when it is on.
  • Blur i didn’t notice much change, neither visual nor performance.
  • Glow add some light effects, most visible in Zemynia Statue base light and candles.
  • Soft Particles for some reason, at least from what i noticed, is not changing a thing, be it On or Off.

I will make 2 videos, before and after the tweak.

I ran some raw tests just changing things in the in-game settings through NVIDIA GeForce Experience window.

Here are the lowest possible FPS drop I’ve seen per setting (I just ran around the populated parts of Klaipeda city, ch1):

(Arranged from Quality to Performance priority)

7.92 = top quality priority (everything on)

8.57 (+ ~ 8% FPS)

9.56 (+ ~20% FPS)

9.47 (+ ~20% FPS) = top performance priority (low mode enabled)

Weirdly enough, enabling low mode doesn’t seem to significantly improve the FPS any further.

For anyone interested in what the +20% FPS settings looks:

I don’t use sounds because I listen to something else while playing (I won’t disagree that in-game BGMs are top quality).

In conclusion though, I like having everything on despite the opportunity of getting better FPS. I’ve been spoiled by how pretty this game looks at max settings.

Interesting, I just tried different settings including the one i had before the merge that gave me problems and the FPS loss is minimal (my guess is ±20%).

I can’t reproduce my issue from before due to that since it feels like there was a bottle neck in the settings, but in reality is in the game itself.

My guess on this is the tempfiles folder, the game create some sort of cache in there and it seem that only update when certain conditions are met or the issue is in other place.

The Performance options are kind useless, the only thing you will notice in difference are water and wind effects between Auto Setup/Disable and Low Mode.

Both effects are on in Auto and Disable as well as High Texture is checked, Low mode disable all effects (except skills) and the FPS improving is minimal.

The more i try to understand what is going on in this game the less i figure out lol, anyway, it is not our function to do that tho.
