Guidance - First steps (Questions)

Hello fellow ToS Clerics!

Intro
I am quite new to the game (never went past lvl 45) and figured, i’d ask the community for tips on the Cleric class, wanting to grow into Monk.

There are already some threads about Monk builds, but i am seeking some more guidance for the game mechanics and maybe some good answers along the way.

The start
Stats: I am building towards 70% Str / 20% Con (maybe more) and enough Dex to hit frequently.

  1. How much Dex (to hit properly) would you invest for some level thresholds, like below 50, above 50, …

  2. I figured to upgrade the plate armor passive. But due to the costs and the current low level silver drops, i was wondering if there was a specific sweet spot to hit before X level?

  3. Is Spr useful to increase ones defense against magic attacks? There was quite some talk about heavy hitting magic mobs in the later stages of the game.

  4. Will Str make a noticeable jump at some threshold? Every point below my lvl experience of 45 just adds small numbers.

Weapons
Currently trying to have +6 sword and hammer for each new “tier”. Again, it is costly right now (Warpick e.g.) and i still feel like missing out some dmg.

[in regards to my current lvl 37/12 Cleric 2nd circle - Tenet Church]

  1. Should i keep using sword and hammer for each enemy type or would you recommend just going hammer with the highest possible upgrade?

  2. I saw a unique hammer for sale (100k) in the ah. It had something like +4 or 5 to aoe, but only little dmg for a lvl 40 (?) weapon (i think it was 55). Would you consider that weapon to be a good and strong lvl weapon for what it costs? Especially the huge aoe increase.

Gameplay
Goal is Monk, steps in between: Cleric - Cleric - Dievdirby - Paladin - Monk.

  1. Will it get easier to kill mobs at some point before reaching monk? Currently just bashing the heck out of every mob i see, wishing for some more power. Dievdirby has “carve”. Will it be a relieve or just just a small aoe?

  2. Also having a Hoplite at lvl 45 and compared to the Swordsman class, i get the feeling of only being able to hit 2-3 mobs as a cleric. Is this a class thing? I always hit 3 mobs easily as a Swordsman, but the Cleric seems to have less reach? Anything on that?

What is your experience with the “road to Monk hood”?
I appreciate every helpful comment! Thanks for reading and have a nice day!

(Edit: Added question numbers for more convenience)

Based on my experience:

  • 30-50 dex and I can still hit enemies. This was on iCBT2

  • Max plate armor passive. You need stamina to spam double punch

  • Monks rarely touch this stat, unless they got nothing to do.

  • Yes but not much. Mostly you rely on your weapons and the skill.

  • You use a sword, a mace and a pierce weapon. You can put to +4 and once you turned into a monk, either stick to mace or sword.

  • I prefer power than AOE.

  • Errr. It will be a very long and excruciating…grinding until you become a monk. Carve should help but…not much.

  • Using a sword, you can hit 3 enemies. Hoppies use a spear that has increase AOE

-My experience. Piece of cake.

Thanks for the reply, Huerin.

Last point: I had the feeling that with sword and mace - as a Swordman - i would always hit at least 3 mobs. As a Cleric i find myself often only hitting 2, even when standing in 4 mobs.

This happened with both play styles = same weapon, same enemies, only different class. The spear has more reach, but for this point, i experienced the issue solely with swords and hammers.

Another thing here: As a Swordman, i can stand in a small gap between 2 enemies and hit both, although they are quite far away. That is not possible with the Cleric so far.

you can hit 3 enemies with a sword; you just need them to be clustered…very close to each others

Just tested it again with a sword:

3 enemies clustered together, only 2 will be hit. When killed, i hit the 3rd, without changing my position.

(Edit: I had roughly 10 groups of mobs and i could not hit 3 at the same time)

Swordman however has like 50% more reach it seems.

Guess it’s either I’m wrong or doing that thing is very painful

Be reactive with DEX, only pump it if you are missing and you have boosted your accuracy with glove upgrades or other means.

SPR won’t be useful for you, the magic defense is very little.

STR will jump as you rank up, so yes don’t skimp on the STR upgrades.

The Five Hammer is nice for a while, but you will grow out of it pretty quickly. I would not spend money on it, farm up the recipe and drops yourself before you do that.

Thank you, Remiri.

Will do :).

Guys, i can’t stand the low dmg… i think i will give up on the monk and wait for some helpful equipment boosts from my warrior.

I am at lvl 72/12, Cleric, Cleric, dirby, got my 100+ dmg sword, farmed the vubbe fighter gloves to be able to hit 3 enemies (like the warrior does from lvl 1), 94 Str, 5k Hp, a ton of plate armor and carve hits around 500 dmg per attack (= 2,5k).

It is a pain… i need around 6 hits for every enemy and 1,5 min. for each boss (due to carve cd). It feels so bad to just run past enemies to get exp cards. Like, field mobs give so little exp, that i call the game design “flawed”.

It can’t hurt the game to adjust mob exp? Even silver drops are so low, i might just go make more in the lvl 20-25 mines with item drops…

–> (Lvl 16 mob): vubbe miner yields around 100 base and 65 job exp / 319 Hp
–> (Lvl 67 mob): Sauga yields around 200 base and 200 job exp / 2086 Hp

seriously ?? :open_mouth:

@Staff_Julie
Sauga should yield ~ 650 exp! (from a Hp point of view) what the ■■■■ is that? Did i get the wrong information on that? Is that even considered a “good” rate for a grinding game??
If our weapons or Str scaling could go up equally, i wouldn’t mind. But that is not the case.

Do you have ANY last advice? (@Remiri) Did you push through all that? I can barely feel fun in the gameplay right now and getting the last job lvls, only to unlock paladin with at least a low cd, high dmg aoe smite attack feels like reaching end game (a joke, right? :D).

I was so hoping for reaching monk and double punch before that. Now i can only imagine guys getting the arde dagger for their twinks, to let them do a little more dmg (i have no idea how much arde would help though).

It only proves you don’t the gall to be a monk then.

Seriously, you got way more str than me and im around lv 100. You should know how to use deprotect zone a lot and then use numerous type of weapons to murder each mob.

Back to your warrior then

You are far from understanding the game, dude!

First you advice to go with 30-50 Dex, which is way off, from what Remiri suggested.

Then you tell me Clerics hit 3 enemies, like Swordsmen. That is only true for small scale enemies, like bees. Every 3rd medium sized enemy will not be hit, even by sword.

Now you are telling me, that i should not play a monk, because i have more Str than you and should use deprotection zone and numerous types of weapons, when we can use slash and blunt only. Cause Staffs do not do good dmg.

–> I use a +5 Kris with around 100+ dmg, have sickerness ready for lvl 75, to take over. Did the Five Hammer to test +5 aoe hit range (which sucks btw), a warpick at around 90 dmg, which will be switched at lvl 75 AND I EVEN GOT THE F**** VUBBE GLOVES, where the blood alone goes for 150k+ (which i was lucky to find after grinding hours).

  • So i use every equipment, appropriate for my lvl, always trying to upgrade asap (but the silver costs explode, so at 27k for upgrading, it is going slow)

  • i use deportection zone on every boss, on field mobs, it is not that helpful. Tested it.

  • i have a good amount of Str, appropriate for a melee dps tryout.

----> You have less clue than me by now, judging by your advice. So i won’t listen to it a bit :D. That is also why i linked Remiri and not you to answer.

upgrading equipment is bad idea on fresh server like this, I basically get broke on CBT with that attitude… Sure refinement increase your equipment’s stats but really not significant…

Okay have you entered Paladin yet? Smite is rock-paper-scissor skill but enemies that weak against strike basically will take huge damage from this.

I have not, was playing Swordsmen mostly, today.
But i will probably reach Paladin soon and try out smite

Yeah, i feel you! But the upgrade is worth it in my opinion. Mostly if you use cheap weapons and reach +8 or +9, their dmg output is really good.

Silver, on the other hand, is a joke from field mobs. Especially when you have zero aoe skills for the first 75+ levels as a cleric. Maybe it is meant to be a pure group play class. Getting the spoils and spamming heal.

Cleric/Derby is very hard to level early on. You will hate life until you are a monk. Just try to party with a warrior or mage and support them.

Yeah i figured :D. Thanks.

Smite is very useful btw. Hits like a truck on devil and mutant types, but the aoe is sort of incorrect; I think you hit less enemies, than a Swordsman with catar stroke, although the aoe ratio of smite has a higher number in the skill description…

Well, at least a first real aoe dmg spell for Str builds. Can be used 2 times, before cd blocks.

I was playing with my cleric and I realized that with 1 handed mace I could hit 3 clustered, and with sword only 2 clustered. I swapped my weapon and tried over and over and nope the one handed sword could only 2 and one handed mace 3.
