Game Theory: Is the MMO genre DYING?

inb4: Everyone gets tired of paying monthly to play a game.

Imho, the problem is not the genre, its who manage it, publishers on west tend to adopt the way they do business on east and tend to cause more problems than anything, most of us here dont want a P2W CS, on east they dont bother much with that, at least is what i’ve noticed, timed items, even cosmetics, why would i buy something with timer for the same price i would pay on other mmo and its permanent? Its stuff like this that keep me away from many games, i think many games have potential, but people are way too focused on money, im not saying they have to work based on charity, thats not how the world works and we all know that very well, but pay attention to what is around, not only to what is in front.

PoE is a game that never leave my hard drive, even if i leave it there for 4 or 6 months i still dont remove it from my laptop, its a game i enjoy taking my time, i would buy more cosmetics and utilities for it if it wasnt the dollar price on my country (its 4x the price now and im really pissed since i do business outside of the country).

  1. The only noteworthy thing about the video is the relative detail in the history of MMOs.
  2. Mobile games are the future? That’s not even much of a theory, he made a guess based on things that apply to existing standards. Replace “mobile games” with “everything trending now” for more results.
  3. Today I learned that I still don’t enjoy The Game Theorist videos. They seem like poorly made jokes meant to sound smart but for all that is said, runs off with the repetitive punch line of “It’s just a theory”.
  4. If you write the numbers (the point numbers on the left of my post) in the wrong order, the forum automatically corrects it for you if done in the format.

MMO is “Massively Multiplayer Online” and that type of game is far from dying.

The thing that is dead are point and click, target lock, press F1~F10 to kill, braindead kind of gameplay (PW, Cabal, and many, MANY others). If they want a target, it should be interactive and still provide some freedom/strategy like GW2, B&S and I would say ToS.

There are a lot of things dying out there right now.
Like Palestinians, Western culture, the marsh trefoil or Youtubers that do more than just attention fishing, among other things.
But the MMO genre is still lively. Be that for better or worse.

Life into death, and death into life. The cycle continues.

I for one like the Game Theory videos for the condensed info they give.

Think many F2P games intentionally creates a bad playing experience that you can bypass by paying them money.
Creates a situation where its Not in the producers best interest to create the best game they can instead they need to create incentives to give them money they dont naturally get it from making a game lots of people want to play.
Dont think the basic idea behind the system is good for the players, now there are a few F2P games that do manage to do a good or equal jobb compared to a subscription game but think longterm as a F2P game keeps cranking out new content the producers interest and the players often are to far apart.

The genre is dying for multiples reasons, the most relevant one is the inevitable change in human behavior. As you can see, old and new generations are stick to the celphones, phones, and mobile shiette all day long. The pc game industry in general is in decadence, this is a vicious cycle, because developers will migrate to mobile and forget about the good old pc industry. The money and investment for the pc industry will decay as the mobile takes over. It is a sad truth, but our world is going to ■■■■ and everyone is twitwing/facebooking/whatssaping about it. The mobile games are pretty shitty and simple, I just can’t find them appealing, but hey, that’s socially accepted nowdays and everyone does it… Right? In other words, our vicious are changing, and so does the market in accordance.

Expect a lot of shietty pc games in the future, since all the money is going mobile…

People forgot that MMOs are all about their community; Nowadays all people want is to win and be instantly gratified with no effort. There’s also have all the Kirito wannabes that want to play in a way the game isn’t designed for

Devs think they need to cater to these sort of people and end making things no one wants to play. P2W games are just another example of this.

Of course this just my opinion

Is LoL really an MMO? I thought it was just technically a MOBA :no_mouth: I might just be really strict with definitions and all but MMO = Massively Multiplayer Online while MOBA = Multiplayer Online Battle Arena so… yeah. I mean sure games in general aren’t dying and MMO’s still has its niche but I don’t think that’s a good example of an MMO that’s still going on strong.

Perhaps Tera (not sure about its current state but I keep hearing stuff about it so meh) would be a better example?

He wasn’t actually saying MMO was dead or dying but instead was changing so… .-. not sure why there is so much hate and harsh words. Of course not watching the video is kinda one reason but then again the title is also kinda misleading since the topic doesn’t have a “?” while the video does. The rest of your post after this point kinda is pointed out and acknowledged in the video as well. ie Mobile MMOs (which was the main point of the video)

cus dota !

also the good mmorpg games are mostly koreans and takes a couple of years for an international version… talking bout you damn blade and soul …im still waiting though

TF2
Default servers have a maximum of 24 players, and some custom servers have 30+.

Personally, I don’t think mobile MMOs will ‘replace’ the current ones we have, simply because the 2 platforms offer different sort of controls.

Imagine trying to play WoW on touch screen, it just doesn’t work as well as keyboard/mouse.
Not to say it’s impossible, after all I saw a video example of Monster Hunter on mobile. But it’s just not the same as the console experience.

They need to bring some new features and a bunch of hard work to make a game worth playing in this genre. I loved RF Online and they just gave up the game and let everyone down, butr it was very innovative.

ToS seems to be the great hope, analyzing the features they are showing us
