[Game Design] Mob Invasion!

Hello Saviors and Toasters! Sharp here with a new topic about ToS’s game design;

So what are Mob invasions? Well it’s something that I only ever heard as rumors and whispers in the wind in the MMO’s I played but never really experienced, in theory a Mob invasion is when there is an irregular mob spawn so it spanws a high number of mobs on one area.

An it can be it’s pretty straight foward for ToS! The areas are connected to each other so having one suddenly become super-populated with mobs we could have a potential for an awesome expirience since people won’t be able to cross that part of the map, creating intense battles looking like an actual war battle.

It also makes people communicate with each other to solve a problem which is cool game design!

I want to hear your thoughts on this my fellow saviors.

I’m totally up for this random event. Have it spawn in towns in halloween or april fools. Also the mobs would need to vary in levels from weak to mvp status so everyone can get involved. With maybe a monster count at the edge of the screen so we can track our progress and a small reward for all those who participated… Maybe better drops from the mobs you kill or some kind of quest item you get after turning in kills at an npc who appears.

Love the idea.

i like that ideia, the game need more stuff like this to make it different from the generic mmos out there.
there’s already those shiny different mobs that have increased drop rate, but i would also like to see mini-bosses that are stronger versions of the normal enemies and they would drop higher grade gems or other stuf… >.>

Well…

I’ve already encountered something like this, and the amount in those screenshots wasn’t even the worst. Had I managed to capture the spawn that was just a little more to the right, it would have looked ridiculous.

(By the way, that huge monster in the first screenshot is some super strong boss.)

danm that looks awsome o_o
is this a dungeon? or a normal map that you were leveling ?

Without asking for random mobs, the dungeons have provided that. Just look at those screenshots.

Hmm…both, technically. I was completing quests there when I saw something strange on my minimap, so I went to investigate. Terrible mistake, lol.

Little did I know, that the Dievdirbys quest would eventually make me go back there.

The point is to be outside dungeons, in places people need to cross or in several areas at once like an army movement.

Which is a bit annoying and dangerous if the mob just came out of nowhere when there are people who’re in low health or critical situation.
I’ve seen some games that use this kind of system perfectly such as Eden Eternal / Eden Online, but the mobs weren’t that big and it appears near town/cities/villages. They were just miniboss with some pawns, so a single player can still kill them or people can’t get out from town if people got killed. Even if they did get out of the town, they will be wasting some of their potions.

I think if some areas had warnings that random mobs could spawn, with the higher risk with better reward, I think it would be pretty fun

But that’s the point! DANGER! Thrills! Adventure! The Unexpected! The death penalty won’t be too high so who cares if it took you by surprise! Better be more prepared next time!

But of course they won’t spawn all at once, but in a fast-ish pace so you can run for your life!

So kind of like the FATE system of FFXIV, but without a level requirement / cap?

It would be fun, but I feel like it would mostly just serve to grief lower level players until a decent chunk of people hit end-game. If I’m sitting on my high horse waiting for a round of GvG or something, I’d love to venture over to a level 40 zone and help some people stave off the mobs. However, if I’m trying to grind…they’re on their own.

If it creates Grief it creates conflict, conflict is good! Real Danger is always better than Virtual Danger.

Now that’s nostalgic.
