Fencer help - not sure what i should do

Im currently stuck with my swordsman class selection. Im currently debating running doppel/dragoon or fencer and was trying to find decent information about the Fencer but was having a little difficulty. From my understanding theyre one of the best tanking classes in the game but i was wondering if they output good dps or not or if it was possible to go more of a damage oriented fencer if not. Obviously the classes chosen to lead up to this would affect the ending result but after having looked at the classes numbers, the fencer doesnt seem to do very much damage at all, so I was curious if I was missing something. Does the class just innately do much less damage than say a dragoon or a doppel? If so, then what are the benefits of going Fencer–I mean, other than enjoying the playstyle.
Additionally, I keep seeing Barbarian builds with Fencer. Why? I thought barbarian skills didnt scale well unless you go strength, but for Fencer wouldnt Dex be much better? And also, what other classes would mesh well with Fencer? I was thinking maybe Hoplite c2 for spear lunge but I wasnt sure if its worth it.

Sorry if my post comes off as a tad ignorant sonce admittedly I am quite ignorant in regards to how I should be building characters and whatnot. I didnt get to play in the beta so my information comes primarily from stuff I read, the simulator, or gameplay footage.

Please take a look at the pinned posts on Swordsman builds for more information on damage comparisons and such. You will find your answers there.

As for Hoplite c2 and Fencer: as someone who played during beta using that exact combination - it’s not great. Hoplite is chosen for Finestra, which improves crit rate by a lot. You can’t use Finestra with Rapiers as a Fencer, and as a Hoplite building Dex a lot is not necessary because of Finestra being there. On the other hand, Barbarian has attack and support skills that you can use as a Fencer later on.

I did look at the pinned posts and they honestly didnt help much. Cathexis`s guide helped a ton with understanding each class but the amount of damage that Fencer deals wasnt exactly explicit in the post, unless I misread.

Thanks for the information on Hoplite though!

Edit: Cathexis does make mention that Fencers deal less damage than Doppels, and that dragoons get skills that are basically just pure dps–so I guess in this respect I am more curious about the benefits of going Fencer. I get that they tank better but if dragoon and doppels can also tank just fine as well as outdps the Fencer, then what are the benefits of Fencer? Are they meant to be used as simply hard to kill tanks? Also I am still curious if going more dps heavy is viable and what build that would consist of.

It’s as you said before: the playstyle (and for some, the costumes). Fencers are more dodge oriented and based on timing. They can block attacks with Flanconnade, as well as having a pair of 0 cooldown skills (EDIT: The second is at C2, with Attaque Composee, so for C1 you would only have Flanconnade).

In the end, Fencers are definitely better tanks than DPS, but it is possible to DPS with them.

I’d suggest pointing any further questions to this post too, since there are more knowledgeable people there, and my information may be outdated. One thing to keep in mind is that because we don’t know further changes that will be made to iToS upon release, and there being few kToS players around, take everything you read with a grain of salt. It is a solid base to construct a build with, but it’s likely that you’ll have to change some things in the actual game depending on what happens, as with every other new MMO. Hope it helps.
