Explain this Token BS to me please

I personally have a different definition for P2W, but I think your definition is certainly something to think about as well!

It used to be we had really great arguments against goldsellers. I mean buying gold in WoW with real money was only something cheaters did! Buying gold destroyed the economy and it was unfair for hard working players who earned their gold by playing the game!

Now? I often have difficulties seeing how imc allowing token sales for silver is so different from those gold sellers… It’s funny how things have gotten so muddled with time :frowning:

It’s “legit” RMT.

Basically, goldsellers botfarm a bunch of gold on a network of alts, introducing extra currency into the system which affects the economy. Paying real money to a 3rd party and offering whatever account information they ask is a security risk which endangers players.

Paying money to the original devs or publishers hopefully isn’t as much of a risk, and no new virtual currency is invented for the transaction, it’s simply exchanged between two real player accounts. Actually, the market tax is a gold sink if anything.

So yes, it’s RMT by definition, but without many of the accompanying issues. Up to you if that’s still bad, or if it’s now acceptable.

If you want to help out a friend you can allways make a steam gift. The Token is the subscription model of this game, or the reason, why you can play that game for free at all. An alternative could be that you can’t play the game for free at all and HAVE to pay a monthly subscription, like many other MMOs do.

We dont know if this will work at all.

dude, the best thing is allow Token trading, and only ffor silver, only in the market. this way if u want “pay ur way to the top” u help all the fp2 players that want to buy tokens

ppl WILL play and ppl WILL wait till high level or rush till high level and buy Tokens, u dont really NEED token to level up and u can keep high priced stuff in ur storage to sell later

once its f2p, i give 1-2 weeks to all the “cheap” Tokens disapear cus some ppl will just rush and buy it as fast as they can, while the others will just wait and more casual play til high level for that

Because one contributes to the game’s development and survival while the other feeds a parasitic industry that consistently kills games?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can’t stop RMT so things like tokens are the common sense way of mitigating the damage. It’s like YouTube and iTunes vs music piracy. Piracy will never stop… but why do people pirate music? Because it’s cheap and convenient. The music industry decided to wise up and combat it by making legit music cheap and convenient too. And it’s worked.

This is the gaming industry equivalent.

I agree with your points. Its worth mentioning as well that, if you look at the market, they made sure to give premium items their own special place. You can bet tokens aren’t going to be the only form of in-house RMT.

Its messed up that many mmos have cash shop RMT without any upper bounds whatsoever. They cater much more the ones choosing to buy sparkle points instead of that new car. Thus its become a very common practice for free to play games to offer premium products in the triple digit range+. For anyone who values dev/publisher integrity the practice is nauseating.

TL;DR
Cash shop models that permit RMT have shown a tendency to degenerate into cash grab models.

Give your friends real money.
