Does the game really need Admin Permissions?

I mean, it seems to be pretty standard in korean MMOs… I have multiple accounts on my computer, the main one being a limited one. I tried to open the game, just to see the main menu and such, and I get asked for admin. I wasn’t gonna say anything, but even if I give it permission to run as admin, the game crashes because “Steam is not running”.

It is, only not in the admin account. And I’d prefer if it stayed that way. Is there any chance this can be modified, so the game works without admin privileges (just as 95% of the games on Steam do)?

**EDIT: **I managed to open by starting Steam as Admin, but the issue persists. It would be nice if the game didn’t require admin permissions, unless they’re actually neccesary (In that case, I’d like to know what exactly does the game need to do)

Install Steam in other folder besides Program Files, it is the permission required to run or install stuff on that folder, I use a slave hdd so my steam is on the drive F:, you can install Steam on C:\Games\Steam to avoid that, note that before you do that, make a backup of your games, you can move the folder common to the new one for that, uninstall steam client and reinstall it again, put the folder back where it should be, Steam\steamapps\common, it should do the trick. But i think even so the patcher ask for admin privileges.

Yeah, I know the patcher asks for admin. Games like this one always do, and usually one can avoid it by going to the game’s folder and manually opening the launcher. But as this is a steam app, and requires to be opened from steam itself, that won’t do.

You can open directly from the folder same way, that is why it ask for admin. Well if IMC do something about that, in all honesty, i don’t see the need of a patcher since they apply new files directly on Steam repositories. I already suggested that, it only increase used space with the patcher packages.

I can’t imagine the intrusive ass 3rd party hacking prevention program can run whit no admit rights.

Hello @starg09,

You may be experiencing that problems since the game cannot access the servers. The servers are offline at the moment since it is still in the pre-purchase period. You will be able to access the game on the 29th of March as we have previously announced. Please let me know if the problem still persists after the 29th.

Hi! Thanks for the reply.

What I mentioned has nothing to do with the server list, I’m fully aware that those are still not available. The issue is that the game itself won’t launch unless you’re opening Steam as an admin, because the game asks to be run as an admin.

  • If I open Steam from my account, and don’t grant admin rights to the game, it won’t open.
  • If in the above case I grant permission, the game begins to open, but throws a “Steam is not running” error, and will close the game.
  • If I open Steam as an admin account, the game opens without problems.

I use a limited account mainly for security, or at least to know if an app will ask for permission or not (most, like yours, request it, but others directly access… With a limited account I get a “You need to run this as admin” error, and not something I may not want it to do.

Now, onto the game: I don’t see a reason why the game should ask for admin privileges. The folder it’s located can be accessed through a regular, limited account. The proof: Steam downloads and installs the whole game without them (as with all other games). If you needed it for anticheat systems, that can be run separately, and will still work (First thing that comes to mind: Ragnarok Online 2 and Archeage, IIRC both asked for admin but only on the anticheat, but the game itself didn’t ask for it)

I’d understand requiring admin privileges the first time, as many games on Steam do, because they usually need to install libraries. But after the first launch, they won’t ask for it.

And beyond that, even if I grant the app admin permission, it won’t start because it is opened as an admin, and steam has been opened as a different, regular user. So I get the “NoSteamClient” error above in the OP.

So, long story short: I’d like to know if you could please consider removing the admin requirement on the game, or at least explain why it requires it. I hope it’s more clear this time

EDIT: Mentioning because I’m not sure if this was sent as a reply @STAFF_Ethan

Hello @starg09,

Sorry if I misundertood your first question a bit.
The game currently does not require you to run it as admin. kTOS sometimes needs it due to it’s connectivity with some other software, but the Steam version should be fine.
I personally have never had to run Steam or the game on admin privileges. I have sent your case to the dev team and I’ll get back to you when I receive a reply from them.

That’s good news. It always wants to run with admin rights when I launch it from steam, for some reason, and I’m a little uncomfortable with that.

Ok, thank you!

That sounds really odd then, hope you guys can figure out what is going on

Any update on the topic? Having the same issue, Windows 8.1.

Yep, I’d love to know, too.
I guess no movement done since the game still only launchable via admin.
