Chaste's Tank Build w/ a Choice

Swordsman 1 > Peltasta 1 > Hoplite 1 > Cataphract 1 > Squire 1 > Corsair 1 > Squire 1 > Your Choice 1

If you know swordsman, it would all make sense. But if you don’t, try it.

I realised tanking in ToS is very different from traditional MMORPG like WoW and FFXIV where tank is supposed to face tank most of the time.

K, I think i’ll explain. Might as well…
In ToS, heals are not always dedicated and it does not favour face tanking at all.
You are required to hold aggro of mobs all around the place, both melee and range mobs, magic and physical dmg. Magic attacks does huge damage and ignore blocks and evasion, but at the same time, most of them can be walked away or physically dodged as they are usually AOEs. As a tank, you should:

  1. Avoid getting damage. Kite melee mobs around a small area and escape magic AOE attacks while the dps, ideally, nuke the mobs down with ease. Jump around in circles.

  2. Have enough health from CON, and damage mitigation from gear, CON & SPR stats in terms of physical and magic defence.

  3. CC, kite and reposition mobs together for the DPS with skills that knockback or hold mobs in place.

4)Hold aggro by actively hitting monster to generate aggro. Tanks should not high guard or guard at the same spot. Good DPS would quickly over-aggro.

5)Keep a constant look-out for danger e.g new and loose mobs. If the DPS is constantly over aggro-ing mobs, apologise and request them to not DPS as well, because you are unskilled. You could have handle the situation better.

  1. Accuracy is important and should be your priority in gems socketing and gear choice. You can’t aggro what you can’t hit. AND… do not add Dex for accuracy, its a waste for this build specifically.

Key features of this build:
(KEY FEATURES ONLY)

Level with Str and Con.
To refuse to die? Stats reset to Con, Spr, Dex.

Swordsman 1:
3 BASH - Just enough to unlock the knock-down attribute. Overheat 3, enuff said.
2 Pain Barrier - Refuse to get CC. Because CC are stupid. Activate this and be fearless.

Peltasta 1:
Ability to hold your shield up - Much higher chance to block physical attacks in case of lazy.
5 Swash Buckling - Start the fight using this. Makes holding aggro easier. Not to mistaken this as a infinite taunt. Good DPS can easily over aggro if you do not keep up with additional aggro. It also says it increase maximum provocation, not add provocation, but it does provoke mobs, not sure how this works exactly. But yeah, bread and butter of tanking. Has a very huge range, range is supposedly out-of-screen.
Unbo Blow - Knocksback + knockdown + chance of stun, (OH 2)Overheat 2 enuff said.
Rim Blow - Knocksback, OH 2.
The 2 Blows - Position mobs where you want them to be, knock them together. Requires practice. More CC, gets aggro, survive better.

Hoplite 1:
Ability to wield One-hand Spear & Shield - Spears have the longest melee range. Makes it easier to hit mobs while you run/jump around one-hitting to hold aggro.
Finestra - Attributes that increase AOE attack ratio by 3. Hit more mobs, hold better aggro.

Cataphract 1:
Mount-Up - Mount up and move slightly faster, increase movement speed by 3 units. (figure mentioned in forums)
Trot - Moves even faster for a period of time. Travel faster, aggro more efficiently.
Earth wave - Huge AOE knockdown… AROUND YOU! Good for aggro and CC, AT THE SAME TIME!
Steed Charge - Yet another knockdown CC. Move from one point to another QUICKLY. Single target knockdown tho.

Squire 1:
Arrest - Able to CC Boss and multiple(6) targets in place FROM A DISTANCE! Attributes reduce targets’ physical defense and slows targets after it ends. 10 secs. I said it all.
Repair - THIS IS TOTALLY USELESS. MOST SHITTIEST SKILL EVER. YOU WILL NEVER FIND ANYONE TO PLAY WITH IF YOU ADDED THIS. I cannot be more sarcastic. Just one level will do, because I am absolutely retarded.

Corsair 1:
Jolly Roger - Pride of Corsair. Attributes nullifies attacks at 12.5% with full party of five. It says so, so just believe it, no one really knows if it works. AND… undisclosed chance of dropping silver and items on every hit. AND… killing things inside the AOE which ultimately gives you percentage damage increase, vague skill description, vague understanding. Mysteriously great skill.
Iron Hook - Range CC 3 mobs, similar to Arrest, OR hook and reel in one enemy. 9 secs.
Dust Devil - Immobilize and damage enemies around you. Supposedly does more damage than Barbarian’s Seism. Unable to use Dust Devil with an off-hand shield. Requires you to switch weapon to dagger or pistol.
LASTLY, Ability to use pistol - now you can range aggro. Damn right…

Rank 7, Your Choice :
At this point, you’d like to own a guild? go Templar. No? Then go for whatever you like. My build have a choice. HAHA! Good eh?

(and please do not ask me on my opinion of what choice you want. My choice is Templar. Those interested in following me and help me manage the guild or just make friends, please add me, I’m on Telsiai, name’s Chaste.)

If you like my build, let me know, thanks!

I see all c1 classes and this is a build doomed to fail. If you want me to spare you the agony of remaking your character…

Accuracy is pretty useless unless you’re doing pvp

Thrust is somewhat useful since it has 0 CD and is pretty much your only Pierce attack skill if you aren’t a hoplite. Bash is pretty useless other than KDing enemies. Pain Barrier is decent as it’s your only way of not being interrupted.

You go Hoplite c2/c3 to max Finestra. Other than that, Hoplite c1 is pretty trashy.

Must just be me but everytime I see a Cataphract in my party I’m just sickened with disgust of their playstyle. Cataphracts add practically little to no DPS and they are pretty useless in terms of PvE. They’re pretty decent for PvP tho.

You are never going to use arrest lol. Bosses will just smack you away and you’ll lose it then your skill will be on cooldown. You’re better off just attacking the boss instead of standing there with a rope that just reduces some defense which is btw… around like 50~100 more damage as your party members whack the boss for around 2k-3k of damage.

Trust me… corsair c2, double weapon assault, arde dagger. That’s all you really need. I’m not sure of any viable builds that just build c1 corsair.

Well, the fact that you’re building a templar means you might as well just do Peltasta c3 into squire because your dps will be utter junk at those levels. Rank 6 and 7 classes are the most important for a swordsman. Doesn’t help that your entire build relies on c1 classes either. Your build has no dps and it seems like tanking is really the only way for you to go.

If you’re doing a templar build, I would recommend Peltasta c3 into squire c2.

Other than that, I have no idea what you’re doing with this build because it’s just all over the place lol.

Hi @varuna

First of all, this is a tank build. I did not mention anything about dps or pvp. I get this impression that you are just purely intimidated by the pure awesomeness of this build or just did not read what I wrote because lazy.
What I am getting here is that you are purely just trying to undermine my build.

I did not state, but if you read, this is a pve tanking build and guide. Attacks will miss a lot on mobs too if no dex is added and should not be added. Accuracy is needed IMO, from gems sockets and good glove.

This build obviously uses one hand spear, why would I need Thrust for pierce damage?

Let everybody read again. Hahaha! CB, you damn sacarstic sia. NB. Nice one. Hahaha!

What talking you?

There are a few builds you could do but it seems like you want to use spears and also mount so…

I recommend:

Or

Squire c2 is very useful when you’re a guild leader as you can set up a base camp to teleport your party members or let them access their storage. You can also repair and craft food buffs which increase stats.

Because as a templar you’re mostly just going to be supporting your guild or teammates anyway.

I have a squire c2 building into templar atm. I also have a doppelsoelder about to hit rank 7. I’m Lvling a tank and a dps at the same time so it’s taking me a tad longer but that’s my advice and experience for you.

Yes. These are what everybody is doing. I am aware. Thank you.

Rainbow… especially with swordsman… is really bad

but if all you wanna do is tank… anything with C1 will work… so sure go for it…
you don’t need damage to hold aggro, you can do 1 damage, and still get the aggro from your attribute… so it doesn’t even matter what classes you pick along the way.

but note that is not the best, and your “guide” cover the ‘pros’ but not the ‘cons’
which in this case will missguide new players and might make someone go wrong.

if you didn’t actually make the build, and just theorycrafted it thinking it will work… it doesn’t mean it will actually work.

you suggest SPR for swordsman ? not funny.

being the guy who stand there, taking the hits and do nothing usefull…
then go outside and repair his own. and move fast. and carry guild members.
this is so wrong in so many ways you have close to 0 experience in the game. this will end up an ALT just for the guild. not even talking about party and endgame content which will never happen.

if you wanted my opinion after I show you a ‘better one’, there isn’t if all you wanna do is taking hits.
your choice and your favorite taste will fit you. but not fit others.

the other better tanking choices are in the most guides and clearly prove more points. (small example fencer>templar.)

sorry for the harsh words, but it is the honest truth. nothing here mean to offend you, i have really read and think this through.

Yes you are harsh. I’ll just have to prove you wrong. Wait for my videos!

Thanks @Cathexis

Hi, since you mentioned the word tank, here are a couple of items you may want to incorporate into your guide/build/path/whatevs:
