Capability to overkill vs. buffed dps

So, I’m not far into the game because I just got my key with the latest batch of keys a few days ago, but I see people complaining about how unfair it is that dex barbs can overkill nearly everything. I haven’t tried out swordie/barb yet, but I recognized the following when leveling my priest together with an archer:

Archer / Wizard classes seem to deal less damage, and they use a high amount of hits on the enemy. Since lots of buffs seem to be on-hit applied, e.g. priests blessing, doesn’t that buff rapidly-attacking classes later in the game? For example the archers multi-shot (or whatever that skill is called) deals 10 attacks in a second or so. That skill can’t overkill, because it’s divided into small chunks of damage, but every single one of those chunks of damage can apply blessing and/or other buffs separately, giving a huge buff to rapid attacks.

As I said, I’m not expierienced enough with this game. Can someone more lategame-expierienced post thoughts on this topic?

  • How do you think buffs will scale lategame on high single-hit damage vs. high hit count?
  • Are they even usefull lategame, because after all the flat damage of blessing might become negligible in lategame because of the high damage numbers?
  • Are there any buffs which scale to lategame?
  • Also, what about PVP? You might not need to overkill there, so…

Edit: Words, 3rd and 4th question.

I think that blessing and even gung ho or concentrate will be negligible late in the game. Whos gonna notice 30 damage increase in a normal attack of 1k above?

Yep, the thought is that fast-attacking classes / skills might apply 10 hits of 30 damage in a second, which results in 10*30=300 damage.

By the way, any idea if there are any buffs which scale to lategame at all?

The answer would be the one getting hit.

While in your example? That 3% may not seem like much, it could very much define the outcome of a battle.
Say for example that there are two people with exactly the same stats in everything - one of the persons use temporary buffs and the other one do not, the one with the buffs on would be favorable, if said person would use the temporary buffs at a point where they had extra crit or extra penetration of some sort, they would gain even more from using them - this is ofcourse disregarding any form of extra RNG being involved in the calculations.

Soooooo… while it might not seem like much, it is stil very important if you know how to use it.

Any buff that scales with your stats or gives a percentile buff. Aspersio and monstrance are like that. Cleric’s deprotect.
Blessing is very good even later in the game for multihit classes: lvl 5 fully attributed blessing will add 130 unmitigated damage per hit (note that getting blessing to lvl 10 or even 15 is pointless: difference between them is 130, 150 and 170 damage respectively), even for casters.

If you have party of autoattackers they would love Priest’s Sacrament (lvl 1 is enough) for additional bless/concentrate/steady aim proc. If you have pyro - fire enchant will also give additional hit for AA (another bless proc). If you like to go to extremes - get yourself full Carifsun (low level leather set) armor - you’ll get yet another additional hit. That means that you can get 4 procs of blessing with single auto attack. Too bad it doesnt work for skills.

Mages really pick up late game but their low lvl life is painful.

This was actually going to be a part of my post-beta assessment. I played a high level dex barb, and then went to try other classes (did not do pyro, there was enough of them already) and the damage they do is paltry in comparison. I solo leveled my barb, and did not have to grind until level 130. Friends of mine that reached a high level had to begin grinding around level 70-80. I attribute this lack of grind on my part to the overkill damage I was doing.

Other classes need to be buffed so they have the same ability to overkill and level efficiently as barb, or heck, why would anyone play anything else? I don’t want to go barb on official release, but you can bet your bottom dollar I will if the other classes don’t get a buff to their damage.

You mean mid-level, because at low level Earthquake should kill just about everything for you (and at the extremely early level, overkill everything)
