I was talking with a friend of mine the other day who plans on making a Falconer. She was also going hunter and I pointed out to her that both companions take up a character slot.
Now my friend has two characters currently. One she uses to play with me and some other friends in a group setting and the other is for solo play, for when no one is around and she just wants to play the game. My friend has other friends who will likely check the game out when it goes F2P. She expressed the desire to make a new character and level with them when that happens, but upon learning about this companion thing, she has realized that she actually can’t.
Her Hunter going Falconer takes up three slots on its own. This is a really bad design choice. I think this should be changed. I also think we need ways to increase how many character slots we have through work in-game. If character slot expansion is put behind a paywall and certain classes just take up more slots, then that’s extremely unfair and very discouraging for players who want to play those classes. I understand that selling more character slots is a good way to make some money and I sympathize, but at the same time, I can’t understand, design wise, why this is a thing.
Now programmatically, I understand why this was done and I also know that simply changing how the system handles what a companion is makes changing this not very easy. This is just my guess, but the fact that the pet has HP, stamina and earns EXP makes me think that it is derived from the same base class(es) as the player character, so this request may actually involve a lot of change in how a companion is actually structured and recognized by the system. However I think it is a fair suggestion.
I was debating posting this in the suggestion subforum, but I was hoping to get some traction and feedback on the issue before I made a proper thread over there. Thoughts?
EDIT: So my entire example is not realistic, but my point remains. They shouldn’t take up a slot.
