Can companions just not eat up all of our character slots?

I was talking with a friend of mine the other day who plans on making a Falconer. She was also going hunter and I pointed out to her that both companions take up a character slot.

Now my friend has two characters currently. One she uses to play with me and some other friends in a group setting and the other is for solo play, for when no one is around and she just wants to play the game. My friend has other friends who will likely check the game out when it goes F2P. She expressed the desire to make a new character and level with them when that happens, but upon learning about this companion thing, she has realized that she actually can’t.

Her Hunter going Falconer takes up three slots on its own. This is a really bad design choice. I think this should be changed. I also think we need ways to increase how many character slots we have through work in-game. If character slot expansion is put behind a paywall and certain classes just take up more slots, then that’s extremely unfair and very discouraging for players who want to play those classes. I understand that selling more character slots is a good way to make some money and I sympathize, but at the same time, I can’t understand, design wise, why this is a thing.

Now programmatically, I understand why this was done and I also know that simply changing how the system handles what a companion is makes changing this not very easy. This is just my guess, but the fact that the pet has HP, stamina and earns EXP makes me think that it is derived from the same base class(es) as the player character, so this request may actually involve a lot of change in how a companion is actually structured and recognized by the system. However I think it is a fair suggestion.

I was debating posting this in the suggestion subforum, but I was hoping to get some traction and feedback on the issue before I made a proper thread over there. Thoughts?

EDIT: So my entire example is not realistic, but my point remains. They shouldn’t take up a slot.

Pets are people too!!!

But seriously i doubt it pets eating slots = money for imc

the easy way out would be to add 1-2 char slots in the lobby… but then again they would not be able to sell char slots in the CS

I don’t have a problem with buying character slots, I just don’t think companions should use up our current slots.

That wasn’t what i said… i said that the easy way out from the “programmer” point of you you wrote about in your post, would be to add character slots… so you don’t have to modify the code for the companions and “waste time”.

OFC the perfect solution would be that they don’t occupy char slots… but i thought you wrote it yourself how time consuming that change would be didn’t you?

While i do agree that pets are important, i don’t agree with them consuming char slots, it is another down for who come play, i mean, we got lots of builds to test out and 1 char slot less isn’t nice.

IMC can get enough from people trying out builds, i myself want to try every single one of the possibilities.

Now every time i want to buy a pet to put on a different char it will consume a char slot?, I won’t waste TP on char slot for that tbh.

That’s true. It probably is, if companions work the way I suspect they do. I think a quick and dirty solution would be to increase the total available character slots by 1 each time you acquire a companion.

I was in no way agreeing with pets eating slots. Im just saying its unlikely to change due to the fact it means people are more likely to buy slots.

I know you didn’t agree, i was just complementing what you said lol.

That could work, but you’d need to have the companion always occupy that extra slot, so that when you delete it, you don’t lose one of your actual characters.

lol, well it may be my form of express stuff that can cause confusion.

On the plus side, you only ever need 1 companion, because you can use that 1 companion on all your characters. So you could have 1 companion for 3 characters. This still creates an issue with Falconer I would imagine, because they would use up a second slot with their falcon.

That is my doubt, my friend got the companion voucher from the pack, she is using it right now on her hunter, she will go Falconer for a double pet archer build and we still don’t know if it will occupy another slot or no.

I recall players saying the falcon does take a slot

Ah, yeah that is really a down for it.

I think you can only have one pet equiped so if when you are using the falcon you cant use the other pet and yours hunter skills.

Im pretty sure there are videos of falconers with both active. Haven’t tried this pet build my self as pets are usual awful in mmos so i avoid them. but there was a lot of talk about this build in the ktos thread a long time back.

The falcon is considered a summon as i was informed by a friend.

Is that right? Well that ruins my example, but my point remains.
